Harmonizing results of ataxia rating scales: mFARS, SARA, and ICARS

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, Volume 9, Issue 12, Page 2041-2046, December 2022., 2022
Abstract The ever‐increasing body of ataxia research provides opportunities for large‐scale meta‐analyses, systematic reviews, and data aggregation. Because multiple standardized scales are used to quantify ataxia severity, harmonization of these measures is necessary for quantitative data pooling. We applied the modified Friedreich Ataxia Rating Scale

The anterior nucleus of the thalamus plays a role in the epileptic network

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, Volume 9, Issue 12, Page 2010-2024, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Objectives We investigated both the metabolic differences and interictal/ictal discharges of the anterior nucleus of the thalamus (ANT) in patients with epilepsy to clarify the relationship between the ANT and the epileptic network. Methods Nineteen patients with drug‐resistant epilepsy who underwent stereoelectroencephalography were studied ...

Engagement in primary health care among marginalized people who use drugs in Ottawa, Canada

open access: yesBMC Health Services Research, 2020
Background There may be less primary health care engagement among people who use drugs (PWUD) than among the general population, even though the former have greater comorbidity and more frequent use of emergency department care.

Subpar reporting of pre‐analytical variables in RNA‐focused blood plasma studies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pre‐analytical variables strongly influence the analysis of extracellular RNA (cell‐free RNA; exRNA) derived from blood plasma. Their reporting is essential to allow interpretation and replication of results. By evaluating 200 exRNA studies, we pinpoint a lack of reporting pre‐analytical variables associated with blood collection, plasma preparation ...

Identification of functional and diverse circulating cancer‐associated fibroblasts in metastatic castration‐naïve prostate cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cancer‐associated fibroblasts (CAFs) promote cancer growth, invasion (metastasis), and drug resistance. Here, we identified functional and diverse circulating CAFs (cCAFs) in patients with metastatic prostate cancer (mPCa). cCAFs were found in higher numbers and were functional and diverse in mPCa patients versus healthy individuals, suggesting their ...

Circulating tumor cells in metastatic breast cancer patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors – a biomarker analysis of the ALICE and ICON trials

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this explorative biomarker analysis, we assessed serial sampling of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) with CellSearch in two randomized trials testing immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in metastatic breast cancer. Our data demonstrate a prognostic potential of CTCs, most apparent 4 weeks into ICI therapy.

Circulating tumor cells: advancing personalized therapy in small cell lung cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive form of lung cancer that spreads rapidly to secondary sites such as the brain and liver. Cancer cells circulating in the blood, “circulating tumor cells” (CTCs), have demonstrated prognostic value in SCLC, and evaluating biomarkers on CTCs could guide treatment decisions such as for PARP inhibitors ...

Highlights of the Spectroscopy of Hyperons and Cascade Baryons [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
We highlight topical issues in hyperon spectroscopy that will be accessible when a secondary beam of neutral kaons is created in Hall D at Jefferson Lab as proposed to the JLab Program Advisory Committee. The new beam will have a flux of $10^4$ $K_L$/s. The reaction products will be analyzed in the GlueX experimental setup.

Science with the Square Kilometer Array: Motivation, Key Science Projects, Standards and Assumptions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The Square Kilometer Array (SKA) represents the next major, and natural, step in radio astronomical facilities, providing two orders of magnitude increase in collecting area over existing telescopes. In a series of meetings, starting in Groningen, the Netherlands (August 2002) and culminating in a `science retreat' in Leiden (November 2003), the SKA ...
