Depositional and Hydrological Relationships Between Buried Dead Ice and the Active Layer in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica: A Study of Sediment Geochemistry and Cation Concentrations

open access: yesPermafrost and Periglacial Processes, Volume 37, Issue 4, Page 725-752, October/December 2026.
ABSTRACT The McMurdo Dry Valleys, the largest ice‐free region in Antarctica, are home to a cold‐desert hydrologic system of glaciers, snowbanks, streams, and lakes. Freshwater is also stored as dead glacial ice, which is poorly constrained in terms of ion concentrations and interactions with both in situ and overlying sediments.

Quantifying the Surface Deformation of Pingos on the Alaskan North Slope Using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR)

open access: yesPermafrost and Periglacial Processes, Volume 37, Issue 4, Page 682-691, October/December 2026.
ABSTRACT Pingos are large mounds with cores formed of intrusive ice that form in periglacial landscapes. These ice structures can form in regions of discontinuous permafrost, commonly as hydraulic or open‐system pingos, or in locations of continuous permafrost, commonly as hydrostatic or closed‐system pingos.

Optimizing Hybrid Wind–Solar Systems in Barren Land Under Constraints Imposed by Atmospheric Aerosols

open access: yesEarth's Future, Volume 14, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract By using a solar photovoltaic (PV) performance model and applying it to global data from 2000 to 2022, we demonstrated that although the net impact of aerosols on power generation was negative, this loss was almost entirely driven by soiling of panel surfaces and could be mitigated by developing an appropriate cleaning regime.

Mapping the Western Jezero Crater Rim From Orbit: Connections to Regional Geologic Units and Context for Exploration by the Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract The Mars 2020 rover is currently traversing the western rim of Jezero, a Middle to Late Noachian‐aged crater formed by an impactor that struck the northwest edge of Isidis Planitia (hereafter referred to as the Isidis basin) on Mars. Previous studies suggest that pre‐Isidis basin and Noachian outcrops are preserved throughout this region ...

Experimental Aeolian Abrasion of Basalt Sands as an Analog for Producing Martian Dust

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Dust covers a significant portion of Mars' surface, with dust storms periodically engulfing the planet. Despite this, the origins of Martian dust are poorly understood, especially for ancient dust deposits. To address this deficit, we conducted experiments to replicate the mechanical abrasion of saltating sand grains in a Martian desert dune ...
