Dust Loading Increases During Topsoil Flash Droughts Under Rapid Surface Drying and Vegetation Stress

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 19, 16 October 2026.
Abstract Using satellite‐derived dust optical depth (DOD), reanalysis meteorology, and a global topsoil flash drought (TSFD) inventory for 2003–2022, we find that TSFD events are associated with increased dust loading at the global scale. During TSFD events, 44.7% of land pixels exhibited positive DOD anomalies.

Desert Plant Inspired Hierarchical Nanofibrous Membranes for Integrated Solar Desalination and Heavy Metal Remediation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 36, Issue 84, 19 October 2026.
An Alhagi maurorum inspired hierarchical composite membrane (NFCu) was developed by integrating heavy metal remediation and solar‐driven interfacial evaporation in a single platform. Beyond the photothermal effect, a localized photocatalytic process is realized on the CuO surface, deepening the mechanistic understanding of light–matter–water ...

The Implications of Ungulate Population Dynamics for Conservation and Recovery Efforts in the Middle East

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 10, October 2026.
Using long‐term population data from Arabian oryx and sand gazelle populations across the Middle East, we found consistent evidence of negative density dependence, with annual growth rates declining as population size increased, alongside evidence of temporal lag effects in Arabian oryx.

Impact of Sahelian Climate Variables on Solar Photovoltaic Output

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, Volume 14, Issue 10, Page 4891-4909, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Solar photovoltaic (PV) energy is a critical pathway for advancing the energy transition in the Sahel. However, PV module performance in this region is strongly constrained by extreme climatic conditions. This study investigates the effects of (1) wind speed, (2) relative humidity, (3) temperature, (4) dust deposition, and (5) solar irradiance

Stromboli volcano, Aeolian Islands (Italy): present eruptive activity and hazards

open access: yes, 2013
Stromboli, the northernmost island of the Aeolian archipelago, is known for its persistent volcanic activity over the last several centuries and for its cone which, on clear days, is surmounted by a gas plume rising from its summit.

Analysing Large‐Scale Patterns of Linear Dune Morphology and Their Environmental Controls in the South‐Western Kalahari

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 10, October 2026.
Novel, semi‐automated techniques enable the mapping and analysis of dune morphology and its potential environmental controls across the south‐western Kalahari's extensive linear dune field. Relationships between morphometrics and controls vary regionally, for example, the effect of valleys on main dune orientation or orientational variability ...

Fractal Analysis, Morpho‐Sedimentary Aspects and Coastal Vulnerability in Mediterranean Islands: A Novel Approach

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 10, October 2026.
An integrated framework combining fractal geometry, sedimentology and coastal exposure analysis revealed higher coastal vulnerability in Procida than in Mykonos despite the latter's greater shoreline complexity. This approach provides a robust tool for assessing morphodynamics and supporting sustainable management of Mediterranean island coasts ...

Can DNA from wet, temperate soils be used for palaeoecological reconstruction?

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, Volume 41, Issue 7, Page 1114-1124, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Sedimentary ancient DNA in well‐dated contexts (sedaDNA) has great potential as a palaeoecological proxy. A few studies have attempted palaeoecological reconstructions using sedaDNA from soil; these studies have been mainly restricted to cold and/or dry soils.
