Rumen degradation kinetics of coffee hulls treated with calcium oxide under aerobic or anaerobic conditions

open access: yesRevista Colombiana de Ciencias Pecuarias, 2020
Background: Coffee hulls obtained from dry processing, have the potential to be used in ruminant diets. Objective: To evaluate the chemical composition and in situ degradability of dry matter (DM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) of coffee hulls treated

Comparable bacterial growth in platelet concentrates suspended in plasma and platelet additive solution and improved detection of bacterial contamination using a new generation automated culture system

open access: yesTransfusion, Volume 64, Issue 4, Page 665-673, April 2024.
Abstract Background Microbial screening of platelet concentrates (PC) with automated culture methods is widely implemented to reduce septic transfusion reactions. Herein, detection of bacterial contamination in PC was compared between units prepared in plasma and a mix of plasma and platelet additive solution (PAS) and between the BACT/ALERT 3D and ...

The microbial cataclysm that forever changed life’s history

open access: yesEarth History and Biodiversity
After a full century of search, evidence of Darwin’s “missing” pre-Cambrian fossil record was finally discovered in the mid-1950s. Unsurprisingly, given the then widely held belief that Precambrian life was not only unknown but unknowable, the initial ...

Identification of the YfgF MASE1 domain as a modulator of bacterial responses to aspartate [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Complex 3'-5'-cyclic diguanylic acid (c-di-GMP) responsive regulatory networks that are modulated by the action of multiple diguanylate cyclases (DGC; GGDEF domain proteins) and phosphodiesterases (PDE; EAL domain proteins) have evolved in many bacteria.

Detection of zoonotic enteropathogens in captive large felids in Italy

open access: yesZoonoses and Public Health, Volume 71, Issue 2, Page 200-209, March 2024.
Abstract Aims Within the One Health paradigm, infectious disease surveillance have been developed for domestic and wild animals, leaving the role of captive non‐domestic populations, especially felids in zoos and circuses, less explored. This study addresses the proximity of these captive animals to urban areas, necessitating focused monitoring for ...

Role of perfusion medium in rewarming machine perfusion from hypo‐ to normothermia

open access: yesArtificial Organs, Volume 48, Issue 2, Page 150-156, February 2024.
The study compares intra‐ and extracellular type perfusion media for the use in machine perfusion‐assisted rewarming from hypo‐ to normothermia. The results show that Belzer MPS seems to be an alternative to a normothermic medium like Steen solution for rewarming machine perfusion.

The shapeshifting Helicobacter pylori: From a corkscrew to a ball

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, Volume 121, Issue 2, Page 260-274, February 2024.
Helicobacter pylori transforms from helical rods to spherical coccoids when faced with various stresses, including starvation and temperature fluctuations. While it remains controversial whether the latter form is dormant or degenerative, a great deal of overlooked evidence points toward the existence of both.
