ubiJ, a New Gene Required for Aerobic Growth and Proliferation in Macrophage, Is Involved in Coenzyme Q Biosynthesis in Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhimurium. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
International audienceUbiquinone (coenzyme Q or Q8) is a redox active lipid which functions in the respiratory electron transport chain and plays a crucial role in energy-generating processes.

Postbiotics of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei CECT 9610 and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CECT 9608 attenuates store‐operated calcium entry and FAK phosphorylation in colorectal cancer cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, Volume 18, Issue 5, Page 1123-1142, May 2024.
Colorectal cancer (CRC) cells exhibit altered store‐operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE), showing enhanced Ca2+ entry and expression of Orai1 and STIM1 proteins, which also increases cell migration. Exposure of CRC cells to Lacticaseibacillus paracasei and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum postbiotics reduces the expression of these proteins, resulting in a decrease

Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing in Pseudomonas aeruginosa Biofilms: One Step Closer to a Standardized Method

open access: yesAntibiotics, 2020
The ability of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to form biofilm during a long-term infection makes it difficult to treat patients correctly. The current clinical antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods are based on the study of planktonic strains.

Comparable bacterial growth in platelet concentrates suspended in plasma and platelet additive solution and improved detection of bacterial contamination using a new generation automated culture system

open access: yesTransfusion, Volume 64, Issue 4, Page 665-673, April 2024.
Abstract Background Microbial screening of platelet concentrates (PC) with automated culture methods is widely implemented to reduce septic transfusion reactions. Herein, detection of bacterial contamination in PC was compared between units prepared in plasma and a mix of plasma and platelet additive solution (PAS) and between the BACT/ALERT 3D and ...

A Bacterial Shortcut to Amyloidosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
21 p.-10 fig.The synthetic bacterial prionoid RepA-WH1 causes a vertically transmissible amyloid proteinopathy in Escherichia coli that inhibits growth and eventually kills the cells.

Detection of zoonotic enteropathogens in captive large felids in Italy

open access: yesZoonoses and Public Health, Volume 71, Issue 2, Page 200-209, March 2024.
Abstract Aims Within the One Health paradigm, infectious disease surveillance have been developed for domestic and wild animals, leaving the role of captive non‐domestic populations, especially felids in zoos and circuses, less explored. This study addresses the proximity of these captive animals to urban areas, necessitating focused monitoring for ...

INDUCTION OF ANAEROBIC PROCESSES IN BAIKAL ENDEMICS EULIMNOGAMMARUS VITTATUS (DYB.) AND E. VERRUCOSUS (DYB.) (AMPHIPODA, CRUSTACEA) [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Stress Physiology & Biochemistry, 2006
The data confirming the ability of Baikalian endemic species Eulimnogammarus vittatus (Dyb.) and E. verrucosus (Dyb.) to activate anaerobic glycolysis under hypoxia are presented. The differences in the degree and the rate of lactic acid accumulation and

Role of perfusion medium in rewarming machine perfusion from hypo‐ to normothermia

open access: yesArtificial Organs, Volume 48, Issue 2, Page 150-156, February 2024.
The study compares intra‐ and extracellular type perfusion media for the use in machine perfusion‐assisted rewarming from hypo‐ to normothermia. The results show that Belzer MPS seems to be an alternative to a normothermic medium like Steen solution for rewarming machine perfusion.

Rumen degradation kinetics of coffee hulls treated with calcium oxide under aerobic or anaerobic conditions

open access: yesRevista Colombiana de Ciencias Pecuarias, 2020
Background: Coffee hulls obtained from dry processing, have the potential to be used in ruminant diets. Objective: To evaluate the chemical composition and in situ degradability of dry matter (DM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) of coffee hulls treated
