Aerodynamic drag measurement of American footballs

open access: yesProcedia Engineering, 2012
AbstractThe flight trajectory of an American football largely depends on its aerodynamic characteristics. Despite the popularity of the game, it appears that little information on the aerodynamic force experienced by an American football, especially under crosswinds is available in the open literature.

Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.

Two-Stage Multi-Objective Optimization for Improving the Aerodynamic Characteristics of High-Speed Train Nose Shape

open access: yesFluids
An optimal high-speed train nose design was formulated to reduce aerodynamic drag, mitigate tunnel micro-pressure waves, and improve crosswind safety. Using the vehicle modeling function, the EMU-320 nose shape was derived and applied as the base model ...

Soft Robotic Snake with Tunable Undulatory Gait for Efficient Underwater Locomotion

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This study designs an underwater soft snake robot using 3D‐printed soft actuators, controlled by specific signals to generate sinusoidal undulation. Results show a positive correlation between speed and swing amplitude, with optimal performance at 2/3π phase offset, PLA tail, 1.2 voltage growth rate, and 6s undulation period achieving a maximum speed ...
