Origin of Physicochemical and Mechanical Stability of Low‐Temperature Prepared TiO2‐Based Photocatalytic Films: Surface Hydroxyl Density Matching

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
Material science advances show how surface chemistry improves low‐temperature prepared TiO2‐SiO2 composite films. Using a colloidal‐based synthesis method instead of a powdered‐based one, researchers exploit hydroxyl groups' interfacial interactions to create nanoscale structures with superior physicochemical and mechanical stability.

Aerosol direct radiative effect at the top of the atmosphere over cloud free ocean derived from four years of MODIS data [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2006
A four year record of MODIS spaceborne data provides a new measurement tool to assess the aerosol direct radiative effect at the top of the atmosphere. MODIS derives the aerosol optical thickness and microphysical properties from the scattered sunlight ...

On the satellite retrieval of aerosol optical thickness over polar regions

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 1989
Field measurements of aerosol content and optical properties of polar atmospheres are difficult and therefore very scarce, especially over ice‐covered marine areas of the Arctic and Antarctic regions. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the opportunity to retrieve these properties from the blurring effect of the atmosphere on high resolution ...

Recent Progress on Graphitic Carbon Nitride–Based Photocatalysts for Hydrogen Peroxide Synthesis

open access: yesExploration, EarlyView.
This review summarizes recent progress in using graphitic carbon nitride (g‐C3N4) photocatalysts to produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). It highlights how solar energy can cleanly convert water and oxygen into this valuable chemical. We discuss key modification strategies, such as defect engineering, doping, and junction construction, to enhance ...

Sensitivity and Contribution of Organic Aerosols to Aerosol Optical Properties Based on Their Refractive Index and Hygroscopicity

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2016
Organic carbon (OC) accounts for a large fraction of particulate matter. Since many atmospheric organic compounds have different optical properties, it is difficult to determine the optical properties of OC accurately.

Wavelength dependence of aerosol optical thickness in the UV‐B band

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2002
The optical thickness of the atmosphere, τat, was deduced from measurements of narrowband direct solar UV‐B (280–320 nm) radiation. This is the radiation that is strongly absorbed in the stratosphere by ozone, especially near the lower limit wavelength of these measurements, 306.3 nm.
