Could the chemical industry mitigate rapid global cooling from a catastrophic volcanic eruption?

open access: yesAIChE Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Estimates based on historical data place the probability of a catastrophic volcanic eruption in the next 100 years at around one in six. Large volcanic eruptions can lead to significant global cooling for 2–4 years, with potentially devastating impacts on global agriculture.

R‐APEX: A Knowledge Graph–Based Platform for the Elucidation of the Toxicological Mechanisms of Ambient Particulate Matter

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
R‐APEX is a knowledge graph platform developed to investigate how air pollutants such as particularly fine particulate matter (PM2.5) affect human health. By integrating large‐scale biomedical data and using machine learning, it reveals pollutant–gene–disease associations.

Data‐Driven Review on Aerogels and Polymeric Aerogels

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, Accepted Article.
Thoroughly data‐driven review on chemistry–properties–applications of aerogels is provided. Aerogel is a category of solid materials having homogeneous, highly porous nanostructures. Unique physicochemical properties of aerogels have attracted much attention in wide fields due to their potentials for energy/environmental issues in the 21st century ...

Marine aerosols

open access: yes, 2009
The aerosol over the world oceans plays an important role in determining the physical and chemical characteristics of the Earth's atmosphere and its interactions with the climate system. The oceans contribute to the aerosols in the overlying atmosphere by the production and emission of aerosol particles and precursor gases. The marine aerosol, in turn,

Review of the anatomical basis for predicting plutonium alpha particle radiation induced osteogenic cancers

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Plutonium was discovered and first synthesized in the early 1940's. Several isotopes of plutonium are used in nuclear technologies, 238Pu for heat generation and 239Pu for energy production and weapons. Both isotopes emit alpha particles, which pose a significant radiation hazard when incorporated into the body.

Condensational growth and trace species scavenging in stratospheric sulfuric acid/water aerosol droplets [PDF]

open access: yes
Stratospheric aerosols play a significant role in the environment. The composition of aerosols is believed to be a liquid solution of sulfuric acid and water with numerous trace species. Of these trace species, ozone in particular was recognized as being

Dental fluorosis in the European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus): A review of the pathological changes in the enamel of fluorotic cheek teeth and the abnormal pattern of dental wear in affected dentitions

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract This article reviews the pathological changes in the enamel of permanent mandibular cheek teeth and their sequelae in European roe deer from regions polluted by anthropogenic fluoride emissions. The primary (developmental) changes of fluorotic roe deer enamel are hypomineralization and microstructural aberrations, including enamel hypoplasia ...

Relationships of Biomass-Burning Aerosols to Ice in Orographic Wave Clouds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Ice concentrations in orographic wave clouds at temperatures between −24° and −29°C were shown to be related to aerosol characteristics in nearby clear air during five research flights over the Rocky Mountains.
