Learning to Recognize Affective Polarity in Similes [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the 2015 Conference on Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing, 2015
A simile is a comparison between two essentially unlike things, such as “Jane swims like a dolphin”. Similes often express a positive or negative sentiment toward something, but recognizing the polarity of a simile can depend heavily on world knowledge. For example, “memory like an elephant” is positive, but “memory like a sieve” is negative.

YIPFα1A expression is regulated by multilayered molecular mechanisms

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
YIPFα1A, a five‐pass Golgi protein, is regulated at multiple layers. (1) Rare‐codon enrichment drives translation‐coupled mRNA decay. (2) A proximal 3′‐UTR element stabilizes mRNA. (3) A distal 3′‐UTR element included by alternate poly(A) site usage represses translation, which can be overridden by the proximal 3′‐UTR element.

Echo Chambers and Affective Polarization [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
In this study, we seek to understand the effect that online echo-chambers have on increasing affective polarization, by conducting a field experiment on ...

Molecular dynamics simulations of positively selected codons in FcγRI reveal novel biochemical binding properties

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Evolutionary analysis across 32 placental mammals identified positive selection at residues H148 and W149 in the immune receptor FcγR1. Ancestral reconstruction combined with molecular dynamics simulations reveals how these mutations may influence receptor structure and dynamics, providing insight into the evolution of antibody recognition and immune ...

Ideological and affective polarization in multiparty systems

open access: yes, 2023
Inspired by increasingly partisan politics in the US, a burgeoning literature on affective polarization applies the concept to multiparty systems. While there are many literature reviews on polarization in the US, as of yet there exists no comparable stocktaking of comparative research on polarization in multiparty systems.

Pharmacological inhibition of the PERK pathway modulates hepatocellular carcinoma growth and immune signaling

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Pharmacological inhibition of PERK in a DEN‐induced mouse model of liver cancer does not reduce tumor burden but alters cellular stress signaling. Despite blocking PERK activity, downstream stress responses, including CHOP expression, remain active, suggesting compensatory mechanisms within the unfolded protein response that may influence tumor ...

Social Media as an Alter Ego of Reality: What Does Affective Political Polarization Teach Us?

open access: yesRUDN Journal of Political Science
Affective political polarization is comprehensively considered in combination of its emotional, behavioral and cognitive aspects. They manifest themselves in the differences between an individual’s attitude towards politically like-minded people (the in ...

Aging Is a Key Driver for Adult Acute Myeloid Leukemia

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a classical age‐related hematologic malignancy, and a key driver of AML is aging, which profoundly regulates intrinsic factors such as genomic instability, epigenetic reprogramming, and metabolic dysregulation, and alters bone marrow microenvironment.

Political Essentialism and Affective Polarization [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Affective polarization, the phenomenon of liberals and conservatives treating each other as disliked outgroups, is increasingly intense (Iyengar & Westwood, 2015; Pew, 2016).
