Earthquake triggering by seismic waves has been recognized as a phenomenon for nearly 30 years. However, our ability to study dynamic triggering has been limited by our ability to capture the triggering stresses accurately and record the resultant ...

An empirical comparison among aftershock decay models
We compare the ability of three aftershock decay models proposed in the literature to reproduce the behavior of 24 real aftershock sequences of Southern California and Italy.

Log-Linear Model Analysis of Aftershock Sequences: A Review on the 6 February Earthquakes in Turkey
Researchers have conducted numerous studies on earthquakes and aftershocks, some of which have utilized statistical analysis methods. However, there is no direct research examining the interaction between variables thought to influence aftershocks ...

Characteristics of seismic activity before and after the 2018 M6.7 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi earthquake
We applied the epidemic type aftershock sequence (ETAS) model, the two-stage ETAS model and the non-stationary ETAS model to investigate the detailed features of the series of earthquake occurrences before and after the M6.7 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi ...

Precursory Tidal Triggering of the 2011 Mw 9.0 Tohoku Aftershocks
Precursory earth tidal triggering is believed to influence earthquake timing preferentially when a region is critically stressed. However, whether and how the recurrence of aftershocks after a giant earthquake is affected by tidal triggering remains ...

The 2025 Kamchatka Earthquake and Tsunami: Cascading Impacts and Risks to Japan
ABSTRACT On July 29th, 2025, a large earthquake (Mw 8.8) occurred near the Kamchatka Peninsula. This event caused a tsunami that reached Japan's Pacific coast, even though the source was far away. In this study, we analyze the characteristics of earthquakes and tsunamis and discuss how they relate to the recurrence possibility and risk in Japan.

Adaptive Daily Forecasting of Seismic Aftershock Hazard
Seismic aftershock‐hazard analysis is one of the first steps toward establishing an integrated risk‐based decision‐making support framework for emergency management in the event of an ongoing aftershock sequence.

ABSTRACT To enhance the structural robustness of bridges, a rocking arch‐shaped segmental pier with a double sliding system was previously proposed as a low‐cost solution to protect bridges in developing countries. The rocking behavior is triggered by halting the sliding motion, which increases the horizontal load‐bearing capacity and limits ...

Permissible Scale Factors for Various Intensity Measures in Aftershock Ground Motion Scaling
This manuscript investigates the bias introduced by scaling aftershock ground motions when evaluating the performance of structures subjected to earthquake sequences. The study focuses on different hysteretic behaviors exhibited by structures and selects
