Epigenetic Clock in Bears: A Simple Cost‐Effective Blood DNA Methylation‐Based Age Estimation Method Applicable to Multiple Bear Species

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Age is an essential factor to understand the life history and demographic parameters of wildlife. Previously, we established an age estimation method for brown bears based on blood DNA methylation level.

Validated age and growth of Barred Sand Bass within the Southern California Bight

open access: yesCalifornia Fish and Wildlife Journal, 2020
The recreational fishery for Barred Sand Bass (Paralabrax nebulifer) has recently shown declines in catch prompting a need for updating life-history attributes.

Bayesian phylogenetic estimation of fossil ages

open access: yes, 2016
Recent advances have allowed for both morphological fossil evidence and molecular sequences to be integrated into a single combined inference of divergence dates under the rule of Bayesian probability.

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

New method in the age estimation by the spheno-occipital suture. 3D cone-beam CT application [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The aim of the present study was to determine the sequence and timing of closure of the spheno-occipital synchondrosis for a large sample of a modern Italian population to assess if this age marker is a useful tool for age estimation for individuals ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Comparison of Otolith and Pectoral Fin Spine Ages of Black Bullhead Ameiurus melas

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries
Black bullhead Ameiurus melas are an environmentally tolerant fish that are often the target of population‐level management efforts due to overabundance and potential negative influences on sport fishes.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

The adequacy of aging techniques in vertebrates for rapid estimation of population mortality rates from age distributions

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2019
As a key parameter in population dynamics, mortality rates are frequently estimated using mark–recapture data, which requires extensive, long‐term data sets.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.
