Effect of PHF-1 hyperphosphorylation on the seeding activity of C-terminal Tau fragments

open access: yesScientific Reports
Tau proteins as neurofibrillary tangles are one of the molecular hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and play a central role in tauopathies, a group of age-related neurodegenerative disorders.

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Gap in the Intensity of End-of-Life Care between Younger and Older Taiwanese Adult Cancer Patients may not Reflect Younger Patients’ Preferences

open access: yesJournal of Cancer Research and Practice, 2015
Background: Studies on age-related differences in preferences for end-of-life (EOL) care have generally concluded that increasing age predisposes patients to prefer less aggressive EOL care. However, these studies seldom are adjusted for healthcare needs,

Plasmodium falciparum gametogenesis essential protein 1 (GEP1) is a transmission‐blocking target

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study shows Plasmodium falciparum GEP1 is vital for activating sexual stages of malarial parasites even independently of a mosquito factor. Knockout parasites completely fail gamete formation even when a phosphodiesterase inhibitor is added. Two single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (V241L and S263P) are found in 12%–20% of field samples.

Nutritional factors and immunological ageing [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Nutrition Society, 2006
Undernutrition profoundly affects immune responses, particularly at the extremities of life: in infants and in the elderly. The present review focuses on this interrelationship in the elderly. It describes three different stages of ageing: stage 1, healthy ageing, which is observed in very healthy elderly individuals who have no nutritional deficit ...

Forkhead transcription factors and ageing [PDF]

open access: yesOncogene, 2008
Mutations in single genes and environmental interventions can extend healthy lifespan in laboratory model organisms. Some of the mechanisms involved show evolutionary conservation, opening the way to using simpler invertebrates to understand human ageing.
