Parental Age of Onset of Cardiovascular Disease as a Predictor for Offspring Age of Onset of Cardiovascular Disease. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
The risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) is higher for individuals with a first-degree relative who developed premature CVD (with a threshold at age 55 years for a male or 65 years for a female).

Age at Drinking Onset and Alcohol Dependence [PDF]

open access: yesArchives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, 2006
To examine whether starting to drink at an early age is associated with developing alcohol dependence at a younger age and chronic relapsing dependence, controlling for respondent demographics, smoking and illicit drug use, childhood antisocial behavior and depression, and family alcoholism history.Cross-sectional survey.Nationwide face-to-face survey ...

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Familial Risks in 317,000 Patients With Prostate Cancer in Relation to Metastases and Survival-Guiding Diagnostics

open access: yesEuropean Urology Open Science
Background: Swedish nationwide family and cancer data offer the largest global resource for study of familial cancer. We focus here on familial risks in prostate cancer (PC) with questions on risk in individuals from families of multiple affected members

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

PARK(ing) time–How park deficiency affects the biological clock in a Drosophila model of Parkinson's disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Drosophila park mutants serve as a model for Parkinson's disease. We used this strain to investigate the connection between oxidative stress and the circadian clock mechanism. We showed that increased oxidative stress affects the physiology of pacemaker cells, disrupting their daily structural plasticity. Lack of rhythmic signaling from pacemaker cells

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Age-at-onset in Huntington disease

open access: yesPLoS Currents, 2011
In Huntington disease, the accurate determination of age-at-onset is critical to identify modifiers and therapies that aim to delay it.Retrospective data from the European Huntington's Disease Network's REGISTRY and PREDICT-HD, a longitudinal study in prodromal huntingtin gene expansion mutation carriers.

Age of Onset of Cannabis Use is Associated with Age of Onset of High-Risk Symptoms for Psychosis [PDF]

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Psychiatry, 2010
Objective: Increasing interest in the prodromal stage of schizophrenia over the past decade led us to perform our study to monitor people at high risk for developing a psychosis. We hypothesized that cannabis use or a cannabis use disorder at a younger age relates to high-risk symptoms at a younger age.
