This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Opal ring from Novo Brdo and gemstone rings in the late Middle Ages [PDF]
Rings made entirely of one piece of gemstone are a rarity in medieval jewellery. One such ring, made of opal, was discovered during the most recent archaeological excavations in Novo Brdo, in a layer above the floor in a house near the north-eastern ramparts of the lower town, which was formed during the second half of the 14th century. This paper will

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Explorative analysis on red mullet (Mullus barbatus) ageing data variability in the Mediterranean
The uncertainty in age estimation by otolith reading may be at the root of the large variability in red mullet (Mullus barbatus) growth models in the Mediterranean.

Hidden Markov random field and FRAME modelling for TCA-image analysis [PDF]
Tooth Cementum Annulation (TCA) is an age estimation method carried out on thin cross sections of the root of human teeth. Age is computed by adding the tooth eruption age to the count of annual incremental lines that are called tooth rings and appear in

The Age and Origin of Saturn’s Rings
Abstract The origin of Saturn’s rings is a long standing mystery in planetary science, for which the age of this system is a critical constraint. After having clarified what the age of the rings may mean, this article reviews several aspects of this question.

This study explores salivary RNA for breast cancer (BC) diagnosis, prognosis, and follow‐up. High‐throughput RNA sequencing identified distinct salivary RNA signatures, including novel transcripts, that differentiate BC from healthy controls, characterize histological and molecular subtypes, and indicate lymph node involvement.

A‐to‐I editing of miRNAs, particularly miR‐200b‐3p, contributes to HGSOC progression by enhancing cancer cell proliferation, migration and 3D growth. The edited form is linked to poorer patient survival and the identification of novel molecular targets.

Mangrove growth rings: fact or fiction? [PDF]
The analysis of tree rings in the tropics is less straightforward than in temperate areas with a demarcated unfavourable winter season. But especially in mangroves, the highly dynamic intertidal environment and the overriding ecological drivers therein ...
