Aneurysm surgery in patients over the age of 80 years

Resection of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms in the Over-80 Age Group

We reviewed the risk of resecting an abdominal aortic aneurysm in 38 patients aged 80 years or older. The operative mortality for an elective aneurysm was 5.2%, for symptomatic but nonruptured aneurysm 26.6%, and for ruptured aneurysm 66.7%. The preoperative risk factors were essentially the same for the elective and ruptured group.

Thyroid surgery in patients aged over 80 years.

In the past 5 years (1987-1991), we admitted for thyroid surgery 12 patients older than 80 years. Indications for surgery were represented by goiter causing tracheal compression and severe dyspnoea in 6 cases, and by preoperative cytological report of malignancy in the other 6 cases.
