Diseases of the Colon & Rectum, 1991Between January 1, 1973, and December 31, 1986, 1,734 patients underwent colorectal resections for carcinoma. Patients were divided into two groups: Group I included 163 patients aged greater than or equal to 80 years on first presentation; Group II comprised 1,571 patients aged less than 80 years.

Aneurysm surgery in patients over the age of 80 years
British Journal of Neurosurgery, 1993Three cases of cerebral aneurysm in patients over the age of 80 years are reported. Clipping of the aneurysms was successfully performed in all cases, and the patients have continued to lead normal lives thereafter. Aneurysmal surgery should not be withheld merely because patients are elderly.

Characteristics of breast cancer in women over 80 years of age

Thyroid surgery in patients aged over 80 years.
Acta chirurgica Belgica, 1994In the past 5 years (1987-1991), we admitted for thyroid surgery 12 patients older than 80 years. Indications for surgery were represented by goiter causing tracheal compression and severe dyspnoea in 6 cases, and by preoperative cytological report of malignancy in the other 6 cases. The dyspnoea represented an absolute surgical indication.

Resection of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms in the Over-80 Age Group
Southern Medical Journal, 1980We reviewed the risk of resecting an abdominal aortic aneurysm in 38 patients aged 80 years or older. The operative mortality for an elective aneurysm was 5.2%, for symptomatic but nonruptured aneurysm 26.6%, and for ruptured aneurysm 66.7%. The preoperative risk factors were essentially the same for the elective and ruptured group.
