Observers of quantum systems cannot agree to disagree

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
Aumann’s agreement theorem states that observers of classical systems can’t “agree to disagree." Here, the authors show that the same epistemic consistency holds for observers of quantum states, but not for observers of post-quantum no-signalling boxes ...

Agreeing Asynchronously: Announcement of Results [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the 45th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, 2006
This paper formulates and solves a continuoustime version of the widely studied Vicsek consensus problem in which each agent independently updates its heading at times determined by its own clock. It is not assumed that the agents’ clocks are synchronized or that the “event” times between which any one agent updates its heading are evenly spaced ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

When quantifiers do not agree: three systems

open access: yesJournal of Portuguese Linguistics, 2012
Basque weak quantifiers optionally agree with the inflected verb in number. This papers’ main aim is to study the dialectal variation shown by this phenomenon.

Agreeing on disagreement: Heterogeneity or uncertainty? [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Financial Markets, 2016
We study whether disagreement is a useful proxy for uncertainty in the foreign exchange market using monthly forecasts for the euro, British pound, and Japanese yen against the U.S. dollar over the 2001–2017 period. We obtain measures of uncertainty and find that disagreement is not robustly related to uncertainty, as results depend heavily on the ...

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.
