The sustainability of agricultural trade: The case of South Africa

open access: yesCleaner Production Letters
Trade in agricultural products will be a crucial component of adaptive responses to global food insecurity and ensuring its sustainability is thus crucial. This is particularly important for resource scarce countries because agricultural trade allows for the virtual transfer of the resources required for production.

Robust Amorphous MOF‐Based Aerogels Digital Biosensor for Sensitive Detection of Organophosphate Pesticides

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We report a robust aerogel digital biosensor by integrating an enzyme‐mediated amorphous MOF within an aerogel matrix for on‐site pesticide detection. The enzyme‐mediated assembly strategy enables in situ tailoring of MOF into a porous amorphous structure, achieving both high stability and activity.

The role of nature's contributions to people in sustaining international trade of agricultural products

open access: yesPeople and Nature
Nature's contributions to people (NCP) are essential for the production and trade of agricultural, forestry and fishery commodities. Often, there is a spatial disconnect between consumers and the natural systems where the commodities are produced. Traded

From Defense Executor to Engineering Target: Harnessing Lignin for Crop Resistance

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Lignin serves as both a physical and chemical executor of broad‐spectrum plant immunity. This review systematically summarizes classical and recent advances in lignin‐mediated immunity, outlines the multifaceted regulatory modules controlling lignification under biotic stress, discusses key physiological and biochemical mechanisms behind lignin‐based ...

A Modular PLUG‐IN Photosynthetic Chassis With Tunable Thermal Control for Mammalian Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work establishes a “plug‐in” chassis compatible with mammalian systems that synchronizes growth, production, and cell‐wall re‐configuration, providing a versatile platform for photosynthetic bioproduction and microalgal synthetic biology. ABSTRACT Microalgae are promising photosynthetic platforms for high‐value compounds, yet their industrial use ...

T2T Genome Assembly and Multi‐Omics Data Reveal Terrestrial Adaptation and Mucus Biosynthesis in Tropical Leatherleaf Slug (Laevicaulis alte)

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A gap‐free genome assembly and multi‐omics comparison of the terrestrial slug Laevichaulis alte with an aquatic relative reveal that expansion of the VEGF family orchestrates mucus production, lipid metabolism, and immune defense—highlighting key molecular innovations for conquering life on land.

A Single‐Cell Transcriptomic Atlas of the Ovine Rumen Microbiome Characterizes Lineage‐Specific Metabolic Shifts Associated with Host Heat Tolerance

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
An optimized single‐cell transcriptomic framework profiles over 60 000 cells to map the ovine rumen microbiome, partitioning the ecosystem into seven cross‐species functional clusters. In heat‐resistant hosts, a lineage‐specific metabolic shift in Anaerovibrio lipolyticus toward a highly glycolytic phenotype contributes to a “nutritional sparing ...

Breaking the Trade‐Off of Mechanical Robustness and Energy Storage Capacity in Phase Change Materials Through a Molecular Design Strategy of Hard‐Segment‐Anchored/Side‐Chain‐Storage

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
To decouple mechanical robustness and energy storage capacity in phase change materials (PCMs), a series of polyurethane‐based PCMs bearing crystallizable alkyl side chains are synthesized via a hard‐segment‐anchored/side‐chain‐storage molecular design.

Correcting Apparent Priming Bias Unveils Fertilizer Nitrogen‐Risk Archetypes of Surplus and Depletion Across Asian Rice Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Correcting the apparent priming effect resolves systematic biases in Asian rice fertilizer nitrogen accounting. Net soil retention drops below 7%, while 48% of fertilizer escapes, inflicting US$98.53 billion in annual reactive‐nitrogen damages. High‐resolution mapping uncovers N‐risk archetypes across 42% of the rice area, delivering a spatially ...
