Parametric Open Source Cold-Frame Agrivoltaic Systems [PDF]

open access: yesInventions, 2021
There is an intense need to optimize agrivoltaic systems. This article describes the invention of a new testing system: the parametric open source cold-frame agrivoltaic system (POSCAS). POSCAS is an adapted gardening cold-frame used in cold climates as it acts as a small greenhouse for agricultural production.

Solar farms can mitigate negative impacts of whiplash weather on plant communities in a dryland ecosystem

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Utility‐scale solar energy (USSE) development generates novel questions regarding coupling clean energy production with terrestrial ecosystem services (e.g., forage production, pollinator support). We found that a USSE array sited in a fallowed cropland maintained a reseeded native plant community even a decade post‐restoration and that the array ...

Regenerative agrivoltaics: Challenges and opportunities in Southern California’s Inland Empire region

open access: yesEnergy Nexus
“Regenerative agrivoltaics” involves the co-location of regenerative agriculture (RA) and solar development. While RA focuses on promoting environmental quality, such as soil health, biodiversity, and other ecosystem services, agrivoltaics is concerned ...

Synergy‐based crop suitability assessment for agrivoltaics: An easy‐to‐use traffic‐light framework for temperate climates

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Climate change and the growing demand for renewable energy are putting increasing pressure on land, as food production and solar power generation often compete for the same areas. In this study, we assessed which temperate‐region crops are best suited for agrivoltaics, a technology combining farming and solar electricity production on the same land. We

Intelligent Control Strategy of a Battery Energy Storage for a Climate‐Controlled Greenhouse with a High Proportion of Local Renewable Energy

open access: yesIEEJ Transactions on Electrical and Electronic Engineering, EarlyView.
Greenhouse cultivation offers the advantage of controlled growth conditions, leading to enhanced crop productivity and quality. However, maintaining these optimal conditions requires substantial energy, resulting in increased greenhouse gas emissions and operational costs. Integrating local renewable energy sources, particularly photovoltaic (PV) solar

Land Use and Economic Trade‐Offs of Large‐Scale Solar in Agricultural Regions: Marginal National Impacts, Significant Regional Variations

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Large‐scale solar generation is critical for energy transitions. In Australia, increased solar production to meet emission targets means its land footprint increasingly competes with agricultural land. Understanding the scale and location of agricultural land use change and potential profitability losses from large‐scale solar farms is ...
