Effect of Prophylaxis on the Clinical Manifestations of AIDS‐Related Opportunistic Infections [PDF]

open access: bronzeClinical Infectious Diseases, 1998
Administration of targeted prophylaxis for AIDS-related opportunistic infections has contributed significantly to the recent decrease in mortality among patients with AIDS in the United States. Most reported prophylaxis trials have focused on determining (a) the percentage of cases prevented and (b) the effect of widespread antibiotic use on drug ...

AIDS-Related Opportunistic Infections in Hospital Kuala Lumpur

open access: bronzeJapanese Journal of Infectious Diseases, 2003
We retrospectively reviewed 419 HIV/AIDS patients in Hospital Kuala Lumpur from 1994 to 2001. In the male group, the age range was 20-74, with a mean age 37 years, while in the female group it was 17-63, with a mean age of 33 years. With regard to age group, it was found that the preponderant age group was 25-34 years.

Experimental Results on Chloroquine and AIDS-Related Opportunistic Infections

open access: greenJAIDS Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes, 2001
Apart from its antiretroviral effects, chloroquine (CQ) has other properties that may be of interest in setting of HIV infection. First, it is an anti-inflammatory drug and, second, it may help to prevent several AIDS-related opportunistic infections.

Trends in AIDS-Related Opportunistic Infections among Men Who Have Sex with Men and among Injecting Drug Users, 1991-1996 [PDF]

open access: bronzeJournal of Infectious Diseases, 1998
Incidence trends for the 13 most frequent AIDS-defining opportunistic infections (OIs) among men who have sex with men (MSM, n = 15,588) and injecting drug users (IDUs, n = 4475) were examined using data abstracted from medical records in >90 hospitals and clinics in nine US cities during 1991-1996.

Iron Regulation and an Opportunistic AIDS-Related Fungal Infection

open access: goldPLoS Biology, 2006
Because HIV attacks the very cells charged with fighting infection, the virus compromises the body’s ability to co-exist with pathogens that are otherwise harmless. It is these pathogen-induced opportunistic infections, and not the virus itself, that produce the most debilitating effects of the disease.

Early Antiretroviral Therapy for Patients With Acute AIDS-Related Opportunistic Infections: A Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of ACTG A5164 [PDF]

open access: bronzeHIV Clinical Trials, 2010
ACTG A5164 demonstrated that early antiretroviral therapy (ART) in HIV-infected patients with acute opportunistic infections (OIs) reduced death and AIDS progression compared to ART initiation 1 month later. We project the life expectancies, costs, and incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) of these strategies.using an HIV simulation model, we ...

Disparities in the prevalence of AIDS related opportunistic infections in Nigeria- implications for initiating prophylaxis based on absolute CD4 Count [PDF]

open access: goldRetrovirology, 2012
The differences that exist between the CD4 count strata at which certain opportunistic infections occur in sub Saharan Africa suggest that targeting prophylaxis at HIV patients in this part of the world based on data generated from developed countries may be one of the reasons why there is high HIV-related morbidity in Africa.

The Cost-effectiveness of Preventing AIDS-Related Opportunistic Infections [PDF]

open access: closedJAMA, 1998
Multiple options are now available for prophylaxis of opportunistic infections related to the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). However, because of differences in incidence rates as well as drug efficacy, toxicity, and costs, the role of different types of prophylaxis remains uncertain. To determine the clinical impact, cost, and cost ...

Symptoms of AIDS Related Opportunistic Infections and Their Effects on Human Body

open access: hybridJournal of AIDS & Clinical Research, 2013
HIV viruses have long term effects for the immune systems and further develop a number of varied illnesses such as fever, diarrhea, tuberculosis, pneumonia and skin infections. This condition is termed as AIDS Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Once the immune system is sufficiently weakened, such infections will develop and produce any of a wide ...
