Computational Study of the Air/Fuel Mixture in a Small Spark Ignition Engine
Volume 2: 27th Computers and Information in Engineering Conference, Parts A and B, 2007In an effort to understand the fluid dynamics in the droplet formation process, during the fuel delivery portion of operation of a small spark ignition engine, a computational study of the process was undertaken. A combination of high-speed photography and Computational Fluid Dynamics was used to investigate the droplet formation process.

Transient Plasma Ignition of Quiescent and Flowing Air/Fuel Mixtures
2022Transient plasmas that exist during the formative phase of a pulse-ignited atmospheric pressure discharge were studied for application to ignition of quiescent and flowing fuel-air mixtures. Quiescent methane–air mixture ignition was studied as a function of equivalence ratio, and flowing ethane–air mixture was studied in a pulse detonation engine (PDE)

A Study of Air-Fuel Mixture Formation in Direct-Injection SI Engines
SAE Technical Paper Series, 2004<div class="htmlview paragraph">An investigation was made into two approaches to air-fuel mixture formation in direct injection SI engines in which charge stratification is controlled by swirl or tumble gas motions, respectively. Particle image velocimetry (PIV), laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and air-fuel ratio measurement by infrared ...

Study of Air-Fuel Mixture Preparation in a Single Cylinder SI Engine
SAE Technical Paper Series, 2010<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Engine operation at low temperatures is of considerable interest from the standpoint of exhaust gas emissions and fuel economy. A semi-empirical film model is developed to study the transient cold starting process.

Kinetics of NO Formation and Decay in Nanosecond Pulse Discharges in Air-Fuel Mixtures
53rd AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting, 2015Time-resolved, absolute NO and N atom number densities are measured by NO Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) and N Two-photon Absorption LIF in a diffuse plasma filament, nanosecond pulse discharge in dry air, hydrogen-air, and ethylene-air mixtures at 40 Torr, over a wide range of equivalence ratios.

Analysis of the Air-Fuel Mixture Control in Natural Gas Fuelled Turbocharged Engines
ASME 2008 Internal Combustion Engine Division Spring Technical Conference, 2008The use of natural gas in medium and heavy duty engines for public transportation is a promising way for reducing exhaust emissions. Computer simulations, coupled with engine tests, have arisen as a valuable methodology to study the gas exchange processes inside intake and exhaust manifolds.

Influence of the interaction surface between plasma and air/fuel mixture on the combustion process
2012 International Conference and Exposition on Electrical and Power Engineering, 2012This work presents a comparison from the combustion quality point of view between two different spark plugs: a classical one and a new type of spark plug having an innovative geometry and which can provide two simultaneous sparks. The two devices have been tested on a Deltalab EX1000 multi-disciplinary test bench equipped with a Honda GX31 mono ...

The Influence of Hydrogen Addition to the Air-Fuel Mixture on Otto Engine Combustion
SAE Technical Paper Series, 1979<div class="htmlview paragraph">By means of experimental analysis, which were carried out at the chair of Internal Combustion Engines of the University of Kaiserslautern,it could be demonstrated that it is possible to operate an Otto-engine without throttling,at a very high air-fuel-ratio by adding hydrogen to the intake air.Due to the very lean ...

Measurement of Air-Fuel Mixture Distribution in a Gasoline Engine Using LIEF Technique
SAE Technical Paper Series, 1992<div class="htmlview paragraph">The laser-induced exciplex fluorescence (LIEF) technique, currently used to observe mixture formation in a diesel engine, has been applied to a spark ignition (SI) engine and a new equivalence ratio calibration technique has been developed in order that two-dimensional measurements of the equivalence ratio may be ...

Effects of Flash Boiling in Nozzle Flow of GDI Injector on Air/Fuel Mixture
Volume 2: Emissions Control Systems; Instrumentation, Controls, and Hybrids; Numerical Simulation; Engine Design and Mechanical Development, 2018The widths of fuel plumes around nozzle outlets expanded due to flash boiling during the nozzle flow. In some sprays, the length (penetration) of the air/fuel mixture increased due to the flash boiling. A cavitation model was incorporated in a simulation of the fuel spray integrating a simulation of the nozzle flow with a simulation of the air/fuel ...
