Biomineral‐Inspired Organic/Inorganic Colloidal Liquid‐Crystalline Hybrids for Photoresponsive Adhesion

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A new class of photoresponsive liquid‐crystalline (LC) adhesives based on biomineral‐inspired organic/inorganic colloidal hybrids is reported. These colloidal LC materials are formed by hybridization of a hydroxyapatite nanorod with azobenzene‐based forklike molecules.

Effects of Air-Sea Interaction on the formation and evolution of Sea Fog

open access: yes, 2009
Advection and steam fogs over the Yellow Sea are examined with the goal of better understanding its formation and persistence using the mesoscale coupled atmosphere/ocean model. The decrease in the wind speed results in a weakening of turbulence and wind

Conformational Switching of Proteins on Material Surfaces Enabled by Peptide‐Oriented Adsorption

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Responsive biointerfaces could be achieved using conformationally responsive proteins; however, their interconversion can be lost upon surface adsorption. Herein, we demonstrate that the incorporation a Au binding peptide into calmodulin allows for binding control on Au wherein the protein retains conformational switching. This capability was confirmed

An Edible Chitosan‐Based Acoustic Sensor for Sound‐Responsive Actuation in Edible Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces an edible acoustic sensor for robotic food and edible robotics. Built from a chitosan piezoelectric film between gold electrodes, the sensor enables acoustic communication through ON/OFF keying. Integrated into an edible robot with pneumatically actuated arms and neck, it responds to high‐frequency tones.

On Air-sea, Interaction in the Kii Channel

open access: yesOn Air-sea, Interaction in the Kii Channel
Taking the Kii Channel and Osaka Bay as our model region, we have studied the interrelation between small scale oceanic phenomena in a narrow ocean area and mesoscale atmospheric phenomena. Between a line connecting Murotomisaki and Shionomisaki and a line connecting Hinomisaki and Gamatazaki, a countercurrent of the Kuroshio flows along the Pacific ...

Disentangling Bulk and Surface Contributions to Charge and Discharge Fading in High‐Voltage LiCoO2

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
High‐voltage operation of LiCoO2 accelerates capacity fading through bulk and surface degradation. By introducing a LiTaO3 coating to selectively suppress surface degradation, bulk and surface contributions to charge and discharge fading are decoupled.
