Model Sensitivities of Biomass‐Burning Aerosol Chemical Aging, Sulfate Formation, and Cloud Droplet Activation in the Southeastern Atlantic Using CESM and E3SM

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 15, 16 August 2026.
Abstract Biomass‐burning smoke drives large uncertainty in climate projections of the Earth's radiative balance. This is due to the chemical and physical evolution of smoke and its impact on clouds and radiation. Here we focus on the southeastern Atlantic region and its inflow of African biomass‐burning smoke during August 2017.

Unique Vertical Characteristics of Hydrometeors Observed in the Tropical Cyclone Outer Rainband Region

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 15, 16 August 2026.
Abstract This study investigates the vertical cloud microphysics in the stratiform sectors of Hurricane Tammy's outer rainband region and their relationship to local environments. We used in situ Optical Array Probe (OAP) measurements and tail‐Doppler radar data from four NOAA P‐3 spiral modules on 19–22 October 2023, as Tammy intensified from a ...

Impact of a Stratocumulus Scheme on Clouds and Feedbacks in MIROC7

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 15, 16 August 2026.
Abstract Marine stratocumulus (Sc) clouds exert a strong cooling effect on climate by reflecting solar radiation, yet many climate models underestimate their amount and cause uncertainty in equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS). Herein, we show that incorporating a physically based Sc parameterization into the seventh version of the Model for ...

Uncovering Ocean Mixed Layer Dynamics From the Sea Surface State

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 15, 16 August 2026.
Abstract Submesoscale dynamics strongly influence the upper ocean, regulating mixing, air–sea exchange, and vertical heat transport. The recent Surface Water and Ocean Topography mission provides unprecedented high‐resolution observations of sea surface height (SSH), yet linking these surface measurements to subsurface ocean dynamics remains ...

High‐Resolution LiDAR Observations for Coupled Effects of Dry‐Air Entrainment and Haze‐Cloud Interactions on Cloud Vertical Structure

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 15, 16 August 2026.
Abstract This study demonstrates the high‐resolution profiling of cloud microphysics in a laboratory chamber using Time‐Correlated Single Photon Counting (TCSPC) LiDAR. We present a novel retrieval method to derive vertical extinction (σ) $(\sigma )$ profiles, constrained by in situ measurements, to diagnose responses to dry‐air entrainment.
