Microbial Air Quality and Bacterial Surface Contamination in Ambulances During Patient Services

open access: yesOman Medical Journal, 2015
Objectives: We sought to assess microbial air quality and bacterial surface contamination on medical instruments and the surrounding areas among 30 ambulance runs during service.

Resolving the abundance and air-sea fluxes of airborne microorganisms in the North Atlantic Ocean

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2014
Airborne transport of microbes may play a central role in microbial dispersal, the maintenance of diversity in aquatic systems and in meteorological processes such as cloud formation.

Microbiological indoor air quality in subtropical areas

open access: yesEnvironment International, 1993
Abstract In Taiwan, a subtropical country, bioaerosols are regarded to be quick to grow, because of high relative humidity and high temperature all year around. Field investigations of microbiological indoor air quality were performed in six apartments in the Taipei area.

A mechanistic explanation linking adaptive mutation, niche change, and fitness advantage for the Wrinkly Spreader [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Experimental evolution studies have investigated adaptive radiation in static liquid microcosms using the environmental bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens SBW25.

A Bayesian approach to the evaluation of risk-based microbiological criteria for \uppercaseCampylobacter in broiler meat [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Statistics 2015, Vol. 9, No. 3, 1415-1432, 2015
Shifting from traditional hazard-based food safety management toward risk-based management requires statistical methods for evaluating intermediate targets in food production, such as microbiological criteria (MC), in terms of their effects on human risk of illness.

Impact of treated sewage effluent on the microbiology of a small brook using flow cytometry as a diagnostic tool [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Flow cytometry was applied to assess the microbiological impact of treated sewage effluent discharge into a small brook carrying surface runoff water. Increases in dissolved organic carbon and soluble reactive phosphorous were accompanied by increases in

Aberrant expression of nuclear prothymosin α contributes to epithelial‐mesenchymal transition in lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Nuclear prothymosin α inhibits epithelial‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) in lung cancer by increasing Smad7 acetylation and competing with Smad2 for binding to SNAI1, TWIST1, and ZEB1 promoters. In early‐stage cancer, ProT suppresses TGF‐β‐induced EMT, while its loss in the nucleus in late‐stage cancer leads to enhanced EMT and poor prognosis.

Predicting Antimicrobial Resistance in the Intensive Care Unit [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a risk for patients and a burden for the healthcare system. However, AMR assays typically take several days. This study develops predictive models for AMR based on easily available clinical and microbiological predictors, including patient demographics, hospital stay data, diagnoses, clinical features, and ...

Airborne Staphylococcus aureus in the Biology Labs at Southern Adventist University [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Staphylococcus aureus has been of growing interest to the scientific community in recent years. It is not only easily transferred from one person to another, but its rapidly evolving antibiotic resistance has made it increasingly difficult to treat. Once
