Air Void Characterization in Sand-Sulfur-Bitumen Mixes

Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering, 2019
AbstractThis paper represents an attempt to study the internal structure of sand-sulfur-bitumen (SSB) mixes with the help of effective and quick three-dimensional (3D), high-resolution technology s...

Air-Void Stability in Self-Consolidating Concrete

ACI Materials Journal, 2002
Ensuring an adequate air-void system in concrete is essential to obtain proper resistance to freezing/thawing and deicer scaling. With increasing usage of highly flowable and self-consolidating concretes, it is important to ensure that these concretes can secure a proper air-void system that remains stable during agitation, placement, and setting. This

Air voids size distribution determined by ultrasonic attenuation

Construction and Building Materials, 2013
Abstract Voids in cement-based materials influence their material properties. While air voids within a certain range are beneficial for freezing-and-thawing resistance, large-size voids decreases strength and durability. This paper proposes a method to quantify the air voids size distribution, which use the concept of ultrasonic wave attenuation. The

Density Tests Above Zero Air Voids Line

Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, 1989
TO compute the degree of saturation, S, one must have the results from tests for water content, wet unit weight, and specific gravity. Each has inherent variability, which results in a variability in S. This variability results in a percentage of S plotting above the zero air voids line (ZAVL).

Theory of discharges in air-filled insulation voids

11th International Symposium on High-Voltage Engineering (ISH 99), 1999
An initial seed electron, in an air-filled void in an insulator, is followed until a Gaussian shaped electron avalanche is formed that eventually distorts the electric field to form both cathode and anode directed streamers. The crucial role of photoionisation in the three-dimensional formation of a streamer discharge in a void, is demonstrated by ...

A Numerical Test of Air Void Spacing Equations

Advanced Cement Based Materials, 1998
Abstract Air void spacing equations have been proposed in the literature by a number of authors: Powers; Philleo; Attiogbe; and Pleau and Pigeon. Each proposed spacing equation attempts to characterize the true “spacing” of entrained air voids in concrete.

Characterization of Entrained Air Voids Using Scattered Ultrasound

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2006
The passage of ultrasound waves through highly heterogeneous media (e.g. hardened cement pastes that contain entrained air voids for protection against damage during freeze‐thaw cycles) leads to significant loss of wave energy and an apparent attenuation of ultrasonic signal emerging from the heterogeneous zone.

Mean Spacing of Air Voids in Hardened Concrete

ACI Materials Journal, 1993
In this study geometric probability concepts and stereological principles are used to derive an equation for the mean spacing of air voids in hardened concrete. The equation is presented and it is shown that the input paramerers for the equation are the same as those obtained from the standard air-void system analysis of hardened concrete. The equation
