Surface Composition and Temperature Interact to Shape Viral Survival and Growth

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 28, Issue 9, September 2026.
Environmental surface type and temperature interact synergistically to shape viral survival and reproduction. Using bacteriophages T4 and φX174 on copper, steel and plastic at different temperatures, we demonstrate that survival and reproductive capacity are partially decoupled traits, with copper at 37°C causing rapid viral inactivation while their ...

Design of a Bacteriophage‐Based Product for Biocontrol of Fire Blight and Black Rot

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 19, Issue 9, September 2026.
Phytopathogenic bacteria threaten crops, and while chemical pesticides are effective, they harm ecosystems. Bacteriophages like ɸEF1, ɸEF2 and ɸXF1 show promise as biocontrol agents. They remain stable at 4°C and 20°C under neutral conditions, with stability enhanced by additives like CaCO3, improving field effectiveness for ecological and sustainable ...

Industry perceptions of biological control in food manufacturing environments: A qualitative analysis of barriers and opportunities

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Biology, Volume 189, Issue 2, September 2026.
Biological control is widely used in agriculture but rarely deployed in food manufacturing, where industry acceptability is unexamined. Semi‐structured interviews with 17 food manufacturing professionals across 15 facility contexts in northwest England and north Wales explored views on entomopathogenic fungi, Bacillus thuringiensis and parasitoid wasps.

Impact of the COVID‐19 Pandemic on Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Related to Avian Influenza Among Poultry Workers in Cambodia

open access: yesInfluenza and Other Respiratory Viruses, Volume 20, Issue 9, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Live bird markets (LBMs) are high‐risk environments for the amplification and transmission of avian influenza viruses (AIVs). In Cambodia, limited data exist on knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) among poultry workers, who represent a key occupational risk group.

Sedimentary Ancient DNA Tracks Multi‐Kingdom Ecosystem Reorganizations Following Sequential Human Land Use at Crawford Lake

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 35, Issue 17, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Crawford Lake has an exceptional stratigraphic record that began recording biannual (varved) sedimentation in the lake basin ~750 years ago, preserving evidence of shifting cultural zones and agricultural practices, from Late Woodland Period Indigenous agriculturalists to the impacts of industrialization during the late 19th century.

Transcriptional and Functional Insights Into the All‐Stage Resistance Gene GmRmd1‐Mediated Regulation of Resistance to Powdery Mildew in Soybean

open access: yesMolecular Plant Pathology, Volume 27, Issue 9, September 2026.
GmRmd1 is a soybean all‐stage powdery mildew (PMD) resistance gene. Under normal conditions, GmWRKY27 and GmERF138 suppress the expression of GmRmd1. Upon Microsphaera diffusa infection, GmRmd1 interacts with GmRmd2, GmRmd3, GmRnl1 and GmPER1, forming functional protein complexes to regulate lignin biosynthesis and thereby modulate disease resistance ...

Clinically Important Emerging and Uncommon Fungal Pathogens in Asia: Epidemiology, Antifungal Resistance and Challenges in Diagnosis and Management

open access: yesMycoses, Volume 69, Issue 9, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Fungal infections in Asia are influenced by warm, humid climates, high population density and expanding healthcare systems, which together facilitate the emergence, transmission and detection of both common and rare pathogens. While Candida and Aspergillus species remain the leading causes of invasive fungal disease, increasing attention has ...
