Airborne Wind Vector Scatterometer for Sea Surface Measurements

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, 2019
This paper describes the development of an Airborne Wind Vector Scatterometer for low-resolution wind speed measurements. The scatterometer is designed to meet a wind speed accuracy requirement of 1 m/s. In this ad hoc and low-budget project, the development of the instrument exploited some already existing subsystems.

Implementation of Pulse Compression on an Airborne Scatterometer

IGARSS 2008 - 2008 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2008
The pulse compression scheme implemented on the Imaging Wind and Rain Airborne Profiler (IWRAP) is described. Developed at the UMASS Microwave Remote Sensing Laboratory (MIRSL), IWRAP is a dual-band (C and Ku) conically scanning Doppler scatterometer designed to map the atmospheric boundary layer wind fields, ocean surface wind fields, and ...

The DUT Airborne Scatterometer

International Journal of Remote Sensing, 1987
Abstract An airborne scatterometer system operating at six frequencies simultaneously between 1 and 18 GHz has been developed for the measurement of the microwave scattering of vegetation, forests, sea and other targets. After a description of the instrument, some C- and L-band results are presented.

Calibration of the CCRS airborne scatterometers

IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, 1990
A series of experiments and associated analyses which were designed to lead to an end-to-end calibration of the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) fanbeam scatterometers are described. The method followed was originally introduced in 1984 by A. Yizhar et al. for the Ku-band scatterometer at one incidence angle.

Airborne Validation Experiments for Spaceborne Doppler Scatterometers and the Joint Observation of Wind and Currents

2021 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium IGARSS, 2021
An airborne validation experiment using a pencil-beam Doppler scatterometer was carried out in south of Yangjiang River, Guangdong Province, China. Its purpose is to validate the feasibility of spaceborne Doppler scatterometers and simultaneous observations of ocean wind and currents.

Wind and Precipitation Joint Observation Using Airborne Scatterometer

2012 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2012
An airborne multi-pencil beam rotating scatterometer is introduced in this paper. Multi-pencil beam scatterometer can obtain echoes of sea surface and precipitation simultaneously. When the radar system parameters and retrieving arithmetic are carefully designed, sea surface wind vector, three Domain wind vector above the sea and the vertical structure

Airborne validation experiments for spaceborne microwave scatterometers

2012 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2012
This paper elaborates a series of validation methods of the airborne microwave scatterometer, and its technical performance standards. Results of the aviate experiment in the South China Sea of airborne microwave scatterometer are also presented. The test indicates that it is feasible to employ the scheme of flight around the point for testing an ...

Data Processing and Calibration for an Airborne Scatterometer

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 1986
The ERASME radar system has been designed to be easily mounted on small helicopters or aircraft. As it is used for research investigations on radar remote-sensing applications, it has to be well calibrated in every configuration, both absolutely and relatively for comparisons at different points of the swath.

Airborne Microwave Rain-Scatterometer /Radiometer

International Journal of Remote Sensing, 1982
Abstract An airborne microwave rain-scatterometer/radiometer system operated at 10 and 34-45 GHz was developed for the remote sensing of precipitation, especially rain, from an aeroplane. Airborne rain-scatterometers were developed as a first step for the development of the future spaceborne rain-scatterometer.
