A scatterometer model function for the Ku-band radar has been developed, based on data from the FASINEX experiment, that can relate the ocean surface radar cross section to the friction velocity at the air-sea interface. It can now be used to provide estimates of this velocity when RCS data is available.

Comparison of Surface Wind Stress Measurements: Airborne Radar Scatterometer Versus Sonic Anemometer
Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 1980Sea surface wind stress measurements recorded by a sonic anemometer are correlated with airborne scatterometer measurements of ocean roughness (cross section of radar backscatter) to establish the accuracy of remotely sensed data and assist in the definition of geophysical algorithms for the scatterometer sensor aboard Seasat A.

Experimental Results of Sea-Surface Scattering by Airborne Microwave Scatterometer/Radiometer
1985The Normalized Radar Cross Section (σ0) of the ocean was measured as combined functions of microwave wavelength, polarization, wind speed, azimuth angle, and incident angle, using an airborne dual-frequency microwave scatterometer/radiometer system.

Airborne test flight of HY-2A satellite microwave scatterometer and data analysis
Chinese Journal of Oceanology and Limnology, 2016This paper introduces the background, aim, experimental design, configuration and data processing for an airborne test flight of the HY-2 Microwave scatterometer (HSCAT). The aim was to evaluate HSCAT performance and a developed data processing algorithm for the HSCAT before launch.

Soil moisture assessment by an airborne scatterometer in Chernobyl disaster area and Negev Desert
IGARSS 2000. IEEE 2000 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. Taking the Pulse of the Planet: The Role of Remote Sensing in Managing the Environment. Proceedings (Cat. No.00CH37120), 2002The presented results demonstrate the use of airborne radar scatterometers flown aboard a light aircraft for environmental monitoring and precision agriculture. A good agreement between values measured in the field and estimated by the scatterometers has been found with some overestimation for the lower moisture sites. Furthermore, for a more temperate

Implementing Pulse Compression in the Iwrap Airborne Doppler Radar/Scatterometer
2009The pulse compression scheme implemented on the Imaging Wind and Rain Air-borne Profiler (IWRAP) is described. Developed at the UMASS Microwave Remote Sensing Laboratory (MIRSL), IWRAP is a dual-band (C and Ku) conically scanning Doppler scatterometer designed to map the atmospheric boundary layer wind fields, ocean surface wind fields, and ...

Pre-processing algorithm and airborne campaign result analysis of a rotating fan-beam scatterometer
SPIE Proceedings, 2014A Rotating fan-beam scatterometer (RFSCAT), which provides a set of different incidence and azimuth angle combinations and wide continuous swath coverage, will be flown on the Chinese-French Oceanography Satellite (CFOSAT). In this paper, a pre-processing algorithm is developed to estimate the backscatter coefficient (sigma(0)) of RFSCAT, which ...

Ocean Radar Cross Section Modeling Using Airborne Scatterometer Measurements During FASINEX
OCEANS '87, 1987A new measurement program, to develop more precise relationships between the microwave (Ku-band) radar cross section and the ocean surface variables that affect the roughness and reflectivity, is in progress. An extensive data set was obtained during the Frontal Air-Sea Interaction Experiment (FASINEX) during the Winter of 1986 in the Atlantic south of
