Analysis of Space-Based Observed Infrared Characteristics of Aircraft in the Air
The space-based infrared observatory of aircraft in the air has the advantages of wide-area, full-time, and passive detection. The optical design parameters for space-based infrared sensors strongly rely on target observed radiation, but there is still a

The Wright Brothers: First Aeronautical Engineers and Test Pilots [PDF]
Sir George Cayley invented the conventional configuration of the airplane at the turn of the 19th century. Otto Lilienthal realized that building a successful aircraft meant learning how to fly; he became the first hang glider pilot and also the first ...

Microwave observations of sea state from aircraft [PDF]
AbstractMeasurements of the thermal radiation emitted by natural water surfaces at a wavelength of 1·55 cm have been measured from aircraft at up to 12 km altitude. The dependence of the radiation on surface roughness is studied in view of its possible importance to satellite observation of sea state.

Lidar Observations of Aircraft Exhaust Plumes
Abstract A series of field campaigns has been made at British airports using a rapid-scanning lidar and other instrumentation in order to measure the dispersion of exhaust plumes from commercial aircraft. The lidar operated at a wavelength of 355 nm and was thus effectively eye safe.

Ensemble prediction for nowcasting with a convection-permitting model—I: description of the system and the impact of radar-derived surface precipitation rates [PDF]
A key strategy to improve the skill of quantitative predictions of precipitation, as well as hazardous weather such as severe thunderstorms and flash floods is to exploit the use of observations of convective activity (e.g. from radar).
