Nitrogen oxides and the airglow
Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1955Abstract The chemospheric processes lead to various possibilities for description of the contribution of nitrogen oxides in the airglow. An excitation of the Vegard-Kaplan system is indicated when nitric oxide is formed by a three-body collision process involving molecular nitrogen.

The ionospheric glow is due to the desexcitation of neutral or ion molecules and atoms. Its computation requires the knowledge of a number of parameters including the production of the excited species. Several processes occur: resonant and fluorescent scattering, chemical reactions, recombination, photo-absorption or collisions.
