Nitrogen oxides and the airglow

Abstract The chemospheric processes lead to various possibilities for description of the contribution of nitrogen oxides in the airglow. An excitation of the Vegard-Kaplan system is indicated when nitric oxide is formed by a three-body collision process involving molecular nitrogen.

Airglow and ionosphere

The ionospheric glow is due to the desexcitation of neutral or ion molecules and atoms. Its computation requires the knowledge of a number of parameters including the production of the excited species. Several processes occur: resonant and fluorescent scattering, chemical reactions, recombination, photo-absorption or collisions.
