Extraction of airway trees using multiple hypothesis tracking and template matching [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
Knowledge of airway tree morphology has important clinical applications in diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. We present an automatic tree extraction method based on multiple hypothesis tracking and template matching for this purpose and evaluate its performance on chest CT images.

Beyond the Lung. Impact of Elexacaftor/Tezacaftor/Ivacaftor on Sinonasal Disease in Children With Cystic Fibrosis

open access: yesInternational Forum of Allergy &Rhinology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI) is a Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) therapy that improves pulmonary function and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) in cystic fibrosis (CF) adults with at least one copy of the F508del CFTR mutation.

Synthesis and Characterization of Photoswitchable Covalent Ligands for the β2‐Adrenoceptor

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
A structure‐based design of a covalent photoswitchable ligand for the β2‐adrenergic receptor, a therapeutically relevant GPCR, is described. This tool facilitates the modification of the intrinsic activity of the protein by light. Computational analysis of its mechanism of action suggests that the photoswitch takes place within the binding pocket ...

Patient specific numerical simulation of flow in the human upper airways for assessing the effect of nasal surgery [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
The study is looking into the potential of using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) as a tool for predicting the outcome of surgery for alleviation of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). From pre- and post-operative computed tomography (CT) of an OSAS patient, the pre- and post-operative geometries of the patient's upper airways were generated ...

MiR‐221‐3p Attenuates IL‐33‐Induced Mast Cell Cytokine Expression by Targeting KIT

open access: yesInternational Forum of Allergy &Rhinology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Mast cells (MCs) are involved in type 2 inflammation in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP), which depends on interleukin (IL)‐33 stimulation. MiR‐221 is reported to be an important regulator of MCs, and miR‐221‐3p can be expressed in CRSwNP. However, the role of miR‐221‐3p in CRSwNP is unclear. Methods Ethmoid tissues

Superior Benefits of Combining Mepolizumab With Sinus Surgery Compared to Mepolizumab Alone: Results From a Randomised 6‐Month Trial

open access: yesInternational Forum of Allergy &Rhinology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) significantly impacts patients’ quality of life (QoL). Standard treatments include nasal irrigations, nasal steroids, systemic corticosteroids, and functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS).

Testing of novel spectral device sensor in swine model of airway obstruction

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, 2019
Loss of a patent airway is a significant cause of prehospital death. Endotracheal intubation is the gold standard of care but has a high rate of failure and complications, making development of new devices vital. We previously showed that tracheal tissue

Differential Immune Cell Infiltration in Eosinophilic and Non‐Eosinophilic CRS: Correlations With Clinical, Endoscopic, and Radiological Findings

open access: yesInternational Forum of Allergy &Rhinology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background The pathogenesis of inflammation in eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (ECRS) and non‐eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (NECRS) remains poorly understood. This study aimed to assess immune cell infiltration within the sinonasal microenvironment in these conditions.

Examining shortened versions of the Social Responsiveness Scale for use in autism spectrum disorder prediction and as a quantitative trait measure: Results from a validation study of 3–5 year old children

open access: yesJCPP Advances, Volume 2, Issue 4, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Background The Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) is a 65‐item measure yielding a continuous score capturing autism‐related traits. Scores based on SRS item subsets have been analytically examined but administration of shortened versions has not been evaluated prospectively.

Deficiency of DEK proto‐oncogene alleviates allergic rhinitis by inhibiting RhoA/Ezrin‐mediated mitochondrial fission

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
Schematic diagram of the mechanism of DEK regulating RhoA activation Ezrin. Upon house dust mite (HDM) stimulation, HDM‐specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) and inflammatory factors such as interleukin 4 (IL‐4), IL‐5, IL‐13, and eosinophils increased in the nasal mucosa.
