Development of cod farming in Norway: Past and current biological and market status and future prospects and directions

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 14, Issue 1, Page 308-342, January 2022., 2022
Abstract Atlantic cod is a historically abundant species in the North Atlantic region and has contributed to the prosperity of many nations. But a decline in stocks in the last century has prompted to initiate commercial farming of cod in captive conditions. Several approaches have been employed ranging from stock enhancement, capture‐based aquaculture

Wild Atlantic salmon enter aquaculture sea‐cages: A case study

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 3, Issue 5, May 2021., 2021
While the general notion is that aquaculture‐escaped Atlantic salmon can migrate into rivers and interbreed with wild Atlantic salmon, the current study documents the opposite phenomena where newly seawater migrated wild Atlantic salmon, sea trout, and salmon/trout hybrid postsmolts enter sea‐cages stocked with farmed Atlantic salmon.

The future looks like the past: Introgression of domesticated Atlantic salmon escapees in a risk assessment framework

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, Volume 21, Issue 6, Page 1077-1091, October 2020., 2020
Abstract Escapes of domesticated fish from aquaculture, followed by interbreeding with wild conspecifics, represent a threat to the genetic integrity and evolutionary trajectory of natural populations. Approximately fifty years of Atlantic salmon production has left an unprecedented legacy of widespread introgression of domesticated escapees in wild ...

Seasonal Variation of Off‐Flavours in a Full‐Scale Recirculating Aquaculture System Rearing Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus mykiss—A Case Study

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 6, Issue 1, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) is a promising strategy for economically and environmentally sustainable fish farming. Unfortunately, microorganisms in an RAS may produce off‐flavours that accumulate in fish flesh and reduce consumer attraction for aquaculture‐produced fish. Traditionally, geosmin (GSM) and 2‐methylisoborneol (MIB), the

Environmental Impacts of Salmonidae Farming: A Systematic Review and Meta Analysis of Life Cycle Assessment Studies

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 17, Issue 4, September 2025.
ABSTRACT Salmonidae farming is a cornerstone of global aquaculture, but growing concerns about its environmental impacts highlight the urgent need for improved understanding and mitigation strategies. To address this, a systematic review of 31 life cycle assessment studies was conducted, with 15 providing sufficient data for in‐depth meta‐analysis. The

The Growing Importance of Aquaculture: The Case of Norwegian Salmon

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 17, Issue 4, September 2025.
ABSTRACT While the rapid growth in global aquaculture production has made the industry a success story in terms of providing nutritious food, it is often criticized for its limited socioeconomic effects. While there is a burgeoning literature investigating socioeconomic impacts, this is a difficult topic due to limited data availability. In this paper,
