Biases in Southern Ocean Precipitation From Shallow Convection: The Role of Cloud Morphology

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 3, 16 February 2026.
Abstract Precipitation from marine boundary layer clouds is a critical yet highly uncertain feature of post‐frontal conditions over the Southern Ocean (SO), where shallow convection dominates. This study evaluates whether satellite retrievals (GPM‐IMERG and CloudSat) and reanalysis (ERA5) represent the contrasting precipitation between open and closed ...

Local Land‐Atmosphere Interactions Precondition Moist and Dry Heatwaves Under Large‐Scale Subsidence Over the Indo‐Gangetic Plains

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 3, 16 February 2026.
Abstract Increase in pre‐monsoon heatwaves over the Indo‐Gangetic Plains (IGP) of India threatens life and ecosystems. We investigate the sufficiency of large‐scale anticyclones in forming moist and dry heatwaves by analysing local land‐atmospheric conditions prior to 10 heatwaves in IGP.

Characteristic Geometry of Keels in Arctic Sea Ice Ridges

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 3, 16 February 2026.
Abstract Deformation within and between sea ice floes creates pressure ridges, which compose a considerable volume fraction of the Arctic sea ice cover and complicate sea ice volume measurements. An important parameter for quantifying the ice volume contained in these deformation features is the keel shape.

More Rapid Reduction of Spring Snow Cover on the Western Tibetan Plateau by Emergent Constraint

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 3, 16 February 2026.
Abstract Snow cover is a critical component of climate, hydrological, and ecological systems, particularly in high‐altitude and high‐latitude regions. Global warming has driven substantial snow cover retreat, yet projections from climate models vary widely, hindering reliable climate change adaptation and policy planning.

The Influence of Interactive Sea Surface Temperatures on Self‐Aggregation in Channel Domain Radiative‐Convective Equilibrium

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 3, 16 February 2026.
Abstract Convective self‐aggregation describes the spontaneous organization of convection that occurs in radiative‐convective equilibrium (RCE) simulations. Here, we conduct RCE simulations coupled to 2‐ and 20‐m slab ocean models in a 3D channel domain to assess the influence of interactive sea surface temperatures (SST) on self‐aggregation.
