Latent inhibitors of aldehyde dehydrogenase as alcohol deterrent agents
Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, 1984A series of compounds structurally related to pargyline (N-methyl-N-propargylbenzylamine, 4) were synthesized with the propargyl group replaced by a cyclopropyl, allyl, or 2,2,2-trichloroethyl group and, additionally in several cases, with the methyl group replaced by H.

Cyanide is a product of the catalase-mediated oxidation of the alcohol deterrent agent, cyanamide
Toxicology Letters, 1987Cyanide was detected as a product of cyanamide oxidation by bovine liver catalase in vitro under conditions that also produced an active aldehyde dehydrogenase (AlDH) inhibitor. Cyanide formation was directly related to both cyanamide and catalase concentrations and was also dependent on incubation time. The apparent Km for this reaction was 172 microM.

Alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes: Deterrence and intervention
Annals of Emergency Medicine, 2001Impaired driving continues to be a major factor in many injuries and fatalities on our nation's highways. In 1998, alcohol was involved in 38% of all fatal crashes, contributing to 15,935 deaths. The combination of improved public awareness and strong legal sanctions for driving under the influence has been shown to reduce the incidence of impaired ...

Nitrosyl cyanide, a putative metabolic oxidation product of the alcohol-deterrent agent cyanamide
Biochemical Pharmacology, 1996When incubated with catalase/glucose-glucose oxidase, 13C-labeled cyanamide gave rise not only to 13C-labeled cyanide, but also to 13C-labeled CO2. Moreover, a time-dependent formation of nitrite was observed when cyanamide was oxidized in this system. These results suggested that the initial product of cyanamide oxidation, viz. N-hydroxycyanamide, was

Chapter 22. Drugs and Deterrence of Alcohol Consumption
1969Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on studies of drug therapy for deterring alcohol intake in the chronic alcoholic. First advocated as a therapeutic aid in alcoholism in 1948, disulfiram continues to occupy a role as an adjunct to psycnotherapy and behavior therapy. It is generally accepted that disulfiram acts by blocking aldehyde dehydrogenase,

Substance Use & Misuse, 2018
Underage drinking remains a pressing issue on college campuses across the United States. Though the most common form of addressing underage alcohol use on campuses is through deterrence-based policies, evidence suggests deterrence-based methods are ineffective and may produce negative outcomes.Using dyadic data, the objective of this study is to use a ...

Modified Parallel Tracking and Mapping for Augmented Reality as an Alcohol Deterrent
2019Drug addiction among the population is a major social menace. This paper proposes an innovative method to offer a promising deterrent against alcohol abuse using Augmented Reality (AR) as a tool. The proposed method aims at traumatizing an alcoholic person by augmenting multiple multimedia objects in the vicinity of a person.

Deterrence and prevention of alcohol-impaired driving in Australia, the United States, and Norway
Justice Quarterly, 1990A sample of 4,316 drivers from Norway, the United States, and Australia responded to national surveys probing individual, social, and legal factors that contribute to control of alcohol-impaired driving. These factors are considered within the framework of general deterrence (control in response to a fear of punishment) and general prevention (control ...
