Sjögren-Larsson syndrome. Deficient activity of the fatty aldehyde dehydrogenase component of fatty alcohol:NAD+ oxidoreductase in cultured fibroblasts.

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Investigation, 1991
Sjögren-Larsson syndrome (SLS) is an inherited disorder associated with impaired fatty alcohol oxidation due to deficient activity of fatty alcohol:NAD+ oxidoreductase (FAO).

Novel structural features in the GMC family of oxidoreductases revealed by the crystal structure of fungal aryl-alcohol oxidase

open access: yesActa Crystallographica Section D Biological Crystallography, 2009
Lignin biodegradation, a key step in carbon recycling in land ecosystems, is carried out by white-rot fungi through an H(2)O(2)-dependent process defined as enzymatic combustion. Pleurotus eryngii is a selective lignin-degrading fungus that produces H(2)O(2) during redox cycling of p-anisylic compounds involving the secreted flavoenzyme aryl-alcohol ...

Emergence of Staphylococcus aureus Resistance to Antimicrobial Peptides Nisin, NZ2114 and Bacitracin Involves Multiple Phenotypic Changes

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
The AMP‐induced mutant Staphylococcus aureus strain nzR showed increased resistance, five gene mutations, and decreased surface anion levels. AMPs affect the NDH‐2 protein encoded by ndh gene inhibiting the growth of S. aureus. The deletion of the ndh gene promotes the development of AMPs resistance.

Alcohol oxidation by flavoenzymes

open access: yesBiomolecular Concepts, 2014
This review article describes the occurrence, general properties, and substrate specificity of the flavoenzymes belonging to the glucose-methanol-choline oxidoreductase superfamily and the l-α-hydroxyacid dehydrogenase family.

Fabrication of Polypyrrole–Polystyrene Sulfonate by Amperometric Biosensor‐Based Electropolymerization for Cholesterol Determination in Serum

open access: yesBiotechnology and Applied Biochemistry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Since cholesterol triggers many diseases, many methods have been developed for its determination. In this study, an alternative system for cholesterol determination was developed by preparing amperometric biosensors. In the development of the biosensor, Pt/polypyrrole–polystyrene sulfonate film was prepared by electropolymerization of ...

Effects of CO2 limitation on the metabolism of Pseudoclostridium thermosuccinogenes

open access: yesBMC Microbiology, 2020
Background Bio-based succinic acid holds promise as a sustainable platform chemical. Its production through microbial fermentation concurs with the fixation of CO2, through the carboxylation of phosphoenolpyruvate.

Sustainable biofuel production from fish processing waste: lipase‐catalyzed hydroesterification of tilapia residual oil

open access: yesBiofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, EarlyView.
Abstract Fishing waste and byproducts, whether naturally occurring or from industrial processing, are important sources of high‐value compounds. Fertilizers, biomaterials, cosmetics, biolubricants, and biodiesel are some of the substances that can be obtained from these residues. The objective of this study was to conduct a theoretical and experimental

MftG is crucial for ethanol metabolism of mycobacteria by linking mycofactocin oxidation to respiration

open access: yeseLife
Mycofactocin is a redox cofactor essential for the alcohol metabolism of mycobacteria. While the biosynthesis of mycofactocin is well established, the gene mftG, which encodes an oxidoreductase of the glucose-methanol-choline superfamily, remained ...
