The alcohol withdrawal syndrome

open access: yesAnnals of Emergency Medicine, 1982
Summary The alcohol withdrawal syndrome represents an acute medical emergency of probable multifactorial cause. The emergency physician who sees only one point in the spectrum of the patient's disease must be aware of the other clinical entities simulating its presentation.

All‐Aqueous Pullulan Fibers Enabling Visible‐to‐Near‐Infrared Waveguiding with Mechanical and Thermal Resilience

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Pullulan, a biomass‐derived polysaccharide, is transformed into transparent optical fibers using a solvent‐free borax hydrogel‐spinning method. The fibers outperform PMMA with ≈200 MPa tensile strength and 200 °C stability, while uniquely guiding visible‐to‐NIR light and enabling additive‐free humidity sensing.

Unraveling Quantitative Sensing Mechanism and Predictive Molecular Metrics for High‐Performance OFET Amine Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces a novel chloro boron subphthalocyanine/polymer blend OFET sensor achieving 0.005 ppb limit of detection for ammonia at room temperature and high selectivity against similar amines. An original theoretical framework is proposed to describe the sensing mechanism, relating analyte molecular volume and Lewis basicity to sensor ...

Porous Coatings by Vapor Sublimation and Deposition for Molecular Channeling and Filtration in an Interstitial Fluid Microfiltration Device

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A vapor‐based porous coating applied within nitinol tubes demonstrated complete suppression of cellular and tissue ingrowth, overcoming a major limitation of implantable interstitial fluid collection devices. Molecular channeling and diffusion are analyzed with probe molecules, showing reliable transport in vitro and in vivo. The coating also achieved >

Factors associated with delirium tremens: A retrospective chart study

open access: yesMuller Journal of Medical Sciences and Research, 2013
Objectives: Delirium tremens is the most severe on the spectrum of alcohol withdrawal syndromes. The mortality rate in this condition has been reported as high as 20%; however, with appropriate diagnosis and prompt treatment, mortality has been reduced ...

Pregabalin for the Treatment of Drug and Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms: A Comprehensive Review

open access: yesCNS Drugs, 2016
Treatments for physical dependence and associated withdrawal symptoms following the abrupt discontinuation of prescription drugs (such as opioids and benzodiazepines), nicotine, alcohol, and cannabinoids are available, but there is still a need for new ...

Mesenchymal Stem Cell‐Derived Apoptotic Micro‐Vesicles Repaired Sciatic Nerve Defect by Regulating Early Inflammatory Microenvironment and Promoting Angiogenesis

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
HUCMSC‐Apo‐mvs enhance peripheral nerve repair by modulating the inflammatory microenvironment (IME), primarily through coordinated actions on three functional cells. They recruit macrophages and promote their polarization from pro‐inflammatory M1 to anti‐inflammatory M2 phenotypes, increasing secretion of IL‐10 and VEGF.

Differential changes in amygdala and frontal cortex Pde10a expression during acute and protracted withdrawal

open access: yesFrontiers in Integrative Neuroscience, 2014
Alcohol use disorders are persistent problems with high recidivism rates despite repeated efforts to quit drinking. Neuroadaptations that result from alcohol exposure and that persist during periods of abstinence represent putative molecular ...
