The return of metabolism: biochemistry and physiology of glycolysis

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Glycolysis is a fundamental metabolic pathway central to the bioenergetics and physiology of virtually all living organisms. In this comprehensive review, we explore the intricate biochemical principles and evolutionary origins of glycolytic pathways, from the classical Embden–Meyerhof–Parnas (EMP) pathway in humans to various prokaryotic and ...

Araucaria heterophylla oleogum resin essential oil is a novel aldose reductase and butyryl choline esterase enzymes inhibitor: in vitro and in silico evidence

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
The essential oil isolated by hydrodistillation of the oleogum resin of Araucaria heterophylla has been analyzed by GC–MS. Twenty-four components accounting to 99.89% of the total detected constituents of this essential oil were identified.

Phytosulfokine signalling blocks mycotoxin toxicity in Arabidopsis and mediates suppression of cell death activated by bacterial microbe‐associated molecular patterns

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Fumonisin B1 (FB1) is a mycotoxin that disrupts ceramide biosynthesis and kills plants. Prior activation with bacterial microbe‐associated molecular patterns (MAMPs), such as components of bacterial flagella, effectively suppresses FB1‐induced cell death.

Citrus aurantifolia (Christm.) Swingle (lime) Fruit Extract Inhibits the Activities of Polyol Pathway Enzymes

open access: yeseFood, 2020
Diabetes mellitus is associated with several complications, which may result from one or more factors including increased flux of polyol pathway. This study evaluated the inhibitory potential of four citrus fruits namely Citrus paradisi Macfad.

Electrophysiological diagnosis using the coefficient of variation of R‐R intervals and a point‐of‐care nerve conduction device is highly correlated to the diagnosis of diabetic polyneuropathy using conventional electromyographs

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes Investigation, Volume 17, Issue 2, Page 280-290, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Aims/Introduction While treatment for diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN) is still developing, progress has stagnated. The alignment between pathological neurodegeneration in DPN and patients' subjective symptoms is often low, yet these symptoms are frequently used for diagnosis.

Development of novel oxotriazinoindole inhibitors of aldose reductase: isosteric sulfur/oxygen replacement in the thioxotriazinoindole cemtirestat markedly improved inhibition selectivity.

open access: yesJournal of Medicinal Chemistry, 2019
Inhibition of aldose reductase (AR), the first enzyme of the polyol pathway, is a promising approach in treatment of diabetic complications. We proceeded with optimization of the thioxotriazinoindole scaffold of the novel aldose reductase inhibitor ...

Evaluation of the effectiveness and safety of ONO‐2910 for the treatment of diabetic polyneuropathy: An early Phase IIa, multicenter, randomized, placebo‐controlled, double‐blind study in Japanese patients

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes Investigation, Volume 17, Issue 2, Page 310-320, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Aims/Introduction Diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN) is common in patients with diabetes. Its symptoms include pain, numbness, and impaired neurosensory function. ONO‐2910 promotes Schwann cell differentiation and is being developed for DPN. Materials and Methods This Phase IIa randomized controlled trial evaluated the effectiveness and safety of ...

Phenolic composition and inhibitory activity of Mangifera indica and Mucuna urens seeds extracts against key enzymes linked to the pathology and complications of type 2 diabetes

open access: yesAsian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine, 2014
Objective: To investigate the phenolic compounds composition and the inhibitory activity of Mangifera indica (M. indica) and Mucuna urens (M. urens) seeds extracts against some key enzymes (α-amylase, α-glucosidase and aldose reductase) implicated in the
