Effects of spring nitrogen and sulfur fertilization on triticale yield and forage quality

open access: yesAgronomy Journal, Volume 118, Issue 2, March/April 2026.
Abstract Triticale (x Triticosecale) silage has become a popular choice for many dairy producers to increase forage supply. Using fertilization to increase protein concentrations in triticale silage may be an economic strategy for dairies to increase ration protein concentrations and offset the expense of purchased protein sources.

The Vulnerability of New Zealand Forage Plants to Incursions by New Pests, Pathogens and Weeds, and the Case for Greater Protection

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research, Volume 69, Issue 1, February 2026.
We outline the diversity of pests, weeds and plant pathogens absent from New Zealand that threaten forage production, examine their potential import pathways, and outline the challenges of managing them should they arrive. The number and diversity of threats and pathways indicates ongoing incursions are inevitable.

Evaluating the Quantitative Accuracy and Application of DNA Metabarcoding for Dietary Reconstruction in Ruminants

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
This study assessed the accuracy of DNA metabarcoding using ITS2 and trnL markers to reconstruct sheep diets under controlled feeding trials with high‐ and low‐digestibility forage, and in a secondary trial with low‐level inclusions of Medicago sativa. ITS2 offered higher species‐level resolution, while trnL provided broader taxonomic coverage but less

Regenerative Management and Phosphorus Fertiliser Effects on Dryland Pasture Yield and Botanical Composition in New Zealand

open access: yesGrass and Forage Science, Volume 81, Issue 1, January-March 2026.
ABSTRACT This 3.5‐year grazed farmlet study investigated the impacts of regenerative agriculture and soil phosphorus (P) fertiliser on herbage dry matter (DM) yield and botanical composition in sheep‐grazed dryland pastures. Four treatments compared regenerative with conventional agriculture, under high and low P fertiliser, with Olsen P targets of 10 ...
