Replacing alfalfa hay with industrial hemp ethanol extraction byproduct and Chinese wildrye hay: Effects on lactation performance, plasma metabolites, and bacterial communities in Holstein cows. [PDF]

open access: goldFront Vet Sci, 2023
This trial was designed to investigate the effects of industrial hemp ethanol extraction byproduct (IHEEB) and Chinese wildrye hay (CWH) replacement of alfalfa hay (AH) on digestibility, and lactation performance, plasma metabolites, ruminal fermentation,

Effects of Replacing Alfalfa Hay With Native Grass Hay in Pelleted Total Mixed Ration on Physicochemical Parameters, Fatty Acid Profile, and Rumen Microbiota in Lamb. [PDF]

open access: goldFront Microbiol, 2022
This study aimed to investigate the effects of replacing alfalfa with native grass on growth performance, meat quality, and rumen microbiota of lambs. Forty-five 6-month-old Ujimqin lambs with live body weight (BW) of 29.50 ± 0.26 kg were used for the ...

Weaned beef calves fed selenium-biofortified alfalfa hay have an enriched nasal microbiota compared with healthy controls. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Selenium (Se) is an essential trace mineral important for immune function and overall health of cattle. The nasopharyngeal microbiota in cattle plays an important role in overall respiratory health, especially when stresses associated with weaning ...

Effect of alfalfa hay on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and meat quality of growing lambs with ad libitum access to total mixed rations

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Zootecnia, 2016
Forty male Naemi lambs were used to evaluate the effect of total mixed rations (TMR) alone or in combination with supplementation of alfalfa hay offered at different schedules on growth, carcass characteristics, and meat quality.

Pelleted-hay alfalfa feed increases sheep wether weight gain and rumen bacterial richness over loose-hay alfalfa feed

open access: yesPLOS ONE, 2019
AbstractDiet composed of smaller particles can improve feed intake, digestibility, and animal growth or health, but in ruminant species can reduce rumination and buffering – the loss of which may inhibit fermentation and digestibility. However, the explicit effect of particle size on the rumen microbiota remains untested, despite their crucial role in ...

Alfalfa hay digestibility in Sardinian does [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
A feeding trial was carried out on ten Sardinian does. 5 does (group F) were fed with alfalfa hay and the other 5 (group C+F) with alfalfa hay + 0.6 kg of concentrate to measure the digestibility of these feeds. The digestibility was measured by marker

Comparative Value of Alfalfa Pasture, Alfalfa Greenchop, or Alfalfa Hay for Lactating Dairy Cows

open access: bronzeJournal of Dairy Science, 1971
Abstract Thirty Holstein cows, distributed among three groups of 10 each, were assigned randomly to treatments of alfalfa hay, alfalfa pasture, or alfalfa greenchop. A grain ration was offered at 1kg per 3.5kg milk. To prevent bloat, cows pastured on alfalfa or fed alfalfa greenchop received 20g poloxalene daily.
