Weeds and Alfalfa Hay Quality

Weed Science, 1973
Established stands of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. ‘Lahontan’) at six field locations were treated with soil-active herbicides during the dormant period for the control of winter annual weeds. Weeds and alfalfa were hand separated at the first harvest. This forage, which varied widely in weed content, was analyzed for protein.

Spotted Alfalfa Aphid Control in Alfalfa Hay, 1989

Insecticide and Acaricide Tests, 1991
Abstract Test plots for the spotted alfalfa aphid (SAA) were established near Buhl, Idaho. The soil type was Portneuf silt loam and the field was irrigated by surface flow. Five treatments and an untreated check were replicated 4 times in a randomized complete block design. Each individual treatment plot was 25 × 25 ft.

A Model of Alfalfa Hay Storage

Transactions of the ASAE, 1989
ABSTRACT ALFALFA hay baled at various moisture contents and densities was placed into storage where dry matter loss, temperature and quality changes were measured. A two-way analysis of variance indicated that baling moisture (p < 0.01) and moisture times density (p < 0.02) significantly affected dry matter loss; storage temperatures were positively ...

NUTRI-SHIELD TREATED ALFALFA HAY CUBES

Applied Engineering in Agriculture, 1990
A casein-based coating, Nutri-Shield, was uniformly sprayed onto alfalfa hay cubes to determine its effectiveness in protecting cubes subjected to an environment of 38° C (100° F) and 80% relative humidity. Rate of moisture vapor absorption for cubes treated at the manufacturer's recommended application rate was 50% less than that of untreated cubes ...

Nitrogen retention and nutrient digestibility in geldings fed grass or alfalfa hay or alfalfa cubes

Journal of Equine Veterinary Science, 2009
Abstract This study was conducted to determine whether feeding different physical forms of hay alters nutrient digestibility and nitrogen retention (NR). Six Quarter Horse geldings were assigned to any one of three different dietary treatments in three 14-day periods.

Botulism associated with feeding alfalfa hay to horses

Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1991
Botulism was believed to be the cause of progressive symmetric myasthenia in 8 horses on a farm in North Carolina. One horse was found dead, 6 were euthanatized after becoming recumbent, and 1 affected horse recovered. Cecal and colonic contents of 2 horses were determined to contain Clostridium botulinum spores.

Large Round Bale Alfalfa Hay Storage

Applied Engineering in Agriculture, 1988
LARGE round bales of alfalfa hay were stored outside for 8 months in central Oklahoma to determine changes in forage quantity and quality. Five different storage methods were studied. Quantitative and qualitative losses were minimized when bales were elevated and covered.

Bacterial Inoculants for Preservation of Alfalfa Hay

Journal of Production Agriculture, 1988
Harvest loss in alfalfa (Medicago sauva L.) hay production can be reduced by baling hay at a higher moisture content, but an effective preservative is required to avoid excessive storage loss. Experiments were conducted to determine the effectiveness of bacterial inoculants in improving preservation by comparing hay inoculated with several species of ...

Market analysis of alfalfa hay: California case

Agribusiness, 1988
Factors influencing alfalfa hay markets are identified. Alfalfa hay acreage response, demand, and price forecasting models are developed and estimated for California, using econometric and time-series (ARIMA) techniques. The estimated models are used for forecasting alfalfa acreage and prices, and evaluating the dominant market forces.
