Light control of the flow of phototactic microswimmer suspensions [PDF]
Some micro-algae are sensitive to light intensity gradients. This property is known as phototaxis: the algae swim toward a light source (positive phototaxis). We use this property to control the motion of micro-algae within a Poiseuille flow using light.

SAMSON: Spectral Absorption-fluorescence Microscopy System for ON-site-imaging of algae [PDF]
This paper presents SAMSON, a Spectral Absorption-fluorescence Microscopy System for ON-site-imaging of algae within a water sample. Designed to be portable and low-cost for on-site use, the optical sub-system of SAMSON consists of a mixture of low-cost optics and electronics, designed specifically to capture both fluorescent and absorption responses ...

Vampyrella crystallifera sp. nov., an Amoeba That Dissolves Entire Algal Cells at a Remarkable Speed. [PDF]
The vampyrellid amoebae (Order Vampyrellida, Rhizaria) comprise predatory microeukaryotes that inhabit freshwater, marine, and terrestrial habitats. They are known to consume a wide array of prey, which includes microalgae, fungi, and even microscopic ...

Algae frequently get a bad press. Pond slime is a problem in garden pools, algal blooms can produce toxins that incapacitate or kill animals and humans and even the term seaweed is pejorative - a weed being a plant growing in what humans consider to be the wrong place.

Spectra of Reduced Fractals and Their Applications in Biology [PDF]
Fractals with different levels of self-similarity and magnification are defined as reduced fractals. It is shown that spectra of these reduced fractals can be constructed and used to describe levels of complexity of natural phenomena. Specific applications to biological systems, such as green algae, are performed, and it is suggested that the obtained ...
