The Haptophyta is a unique division of algae, members of which possess a haptonema—a flagellum-like structure used for phagotrophic nutrition and/or for attachment to external surfaces. An extracellular layer of endogenously produced organic scales with species-specific shapes and ornamentations is also characteristic of most freshwater genera.

Algae, which live in marine or freshwater, are photosynthetic organisms. They vary greatly in size, morphology, and degree of complexity of their body structures. Algae are generally divided into two main groups, microalgae, which are small in size, and macroalgae, which are larger in size.
