The impacts of replacing air bubbles with microspheres for the clarification of algae from low cell-density culture [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) is a well-known coagulation–flotation system applied at large scale for microalgae harvesting. Compared to conventional harvesting technologies DAF allows high cell recovery at lower energy demand.

Strain Relaxation of Al‐Rich α‐(AlGa)2O3 and α‐Al2O3/Ga2O3 Superlattice on m‐Plane Sapphire Substrates by Plasma‐Assisted Molecular Beam Epitaxy

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Strain relaxation of Al‐rich α‐(AlGa)2O3 single layers and an α‐Al2O3/Ga2O3 superlattice structure grown on m‐plane sapphire substrates by molecular beam epitaxy are discussed. V‐shaped dislocations are formed on the Al‐rich α‐(AlGa)2O3 sample surface to reduce elastic strain energy accumulated during growth.

Optimization of ZnGa2O4:Cr3+ Nanoparticles Synthesis Exhibiting Persistent Luminescence for Nanoplastic Labelling and Imaging in Daphnia Magna

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
ZnGa2O4:Cr3+ nanoparticles with persistent luminescence are synthesized and optimized for labeling microplastics via cryomilling. The solvothermal method provides superior optical properties, enabling background‐free imaging. These luminescent particles are successfully used to trace microplastic uptake and distribution in Daphnia magna, offering a ...

Innovative Integration of Layered Carbon Materials in Biopolymer Fibrous Membranes for Sustainable Water Treatment

open access: yesAdvanced Sustainable Systems, EarlyView.
This review explores the progressive design of biopolymer‐based fibrous membranes enhanced with layered carbon materials such as MXene, graphene oxide, and carbon nanotubes. It highlights how their integration significantly boosts water filtration performance, selectivity, and antifouling properties.

New records and observations of macroalgae and associated pathogens from the Falkland Islands, Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Subantarctic and Antarctic regions remain little explored with regards to their seaweed diversity. This study is based upon collections in the early 1970s and 2007–2013.

Nanocrystalline Cellulose from the Solitary Tunicate Phallusia Mammillata, a Valuable Nanocellulose Precursor

open access: yesAdvanced Sustainable Systems, EarlyView.
This study explores the potential of locally harvested Phallusia mammillata, a tunicate usually discarded as waste from mussles farming as a viable source for producing various high‐grade cellulose derivatives in the form of nanofibrils (NFC) and nanocrystals (CNC). Abstract Ascidians are ubiquitous filter‐feeding marine invertebrates, the only animals

HARMLESS Early Warning System for Advanced Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Sustainable Systems, EarlyView.
The HARMLESS Early Warning System tackles Advanced Materials (AdMa) risk governance by providing a framework, organised in two tiers, underpinned with methods/tools to support risk assessors in the pre‐assessment preceding risk assessment. It allows for initial screening to identify AdMa with concerns considering exposure, hazards, sustainability and ...

Contribution to the biology and geographical distribution of Aegagropila sauteri (Nees) Kutz. [Translation of: Gidrobiologicheskie Zhurnal, Kiev 4(3), 68-69, 1967] [PDF]

open access: yes, 1967
Aegagropila sauteri is a peculiar green algae, the branched thalli of which, according to the amount of growth, forms velvety spheres of a diameter of 3-4, sometimes to 5-6 cm. and bigger. Investigators attribute it to a special genus of green algae. The

Sustainable Flame‐Retardant Poly Lactic Acid Biocomposites Reinforced with Polyphosphate‐Enriched Microalgae: Unlocking the Potential of Hyper‐Compensation

open access: yesAdvanced Sustainable Systems, EarlyView.
This study explores microalgae cultivation for wastewater treatment and enhancement of poly lactic acid (PLA)‐based biocomposites. It achieves up to 99.9% nutrient removal, increases biomass productivity by 322%, and demonstrates a triphasic luxury phosphorus uptake system. Incorporation into PLA improves fire‐retardant properties, suggesting potential
