Active Biopaste for Coral Reef Restoration

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Preserving coral reefs is essential. A conductive, hardening paste for coral attachment and mineral accretion technology is developed, using a bio‐based acrylate soybean oil matrix and graphene nanoplatelets. Corals are attached with and onto the conductive paste, electricity is applied, water electrolysis is induced, and calcium is deposited at the ...

Phytoplankton consortia as a blueprint for mutually beneficial eukaryote-bacteria ecosystems based on the biocoenosis of Botryococcus consortia

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
Bacteria occupy all major ecosystems and maintain an intensive relationship to the eukaryotes, developing together into complex biomes (i.e., phycosphere and rhizosphere). Interactions between eukaryotes and bacteria range from cooperative to competitive,

Bioinspired Design of Heterogenous Single‐Atomic‐Site Catalysts for Electrocatalysis and Photocatalysis

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This review gives a summary on the representative bioinspired single‐atomic‐site catalysts (SACs) and their applications in heterogeneous electrocatalysis and photocatalysis. The fundamentals of bioinspired design strategies are systematically discussed in the context of the first shell coordination, the second/long‐range coordination, and the outer ...

Nanoarchitectonics of Metal–Organic Framework and Nanocellulose Composites for Multifunctional Environmental Remediation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Nanoscale metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and nanocellulose composites have significant potential for the multi‐functional remediation of the environment. This review focused on the synthesis strategies (in situ growth, ex situ growth, and other approaches), typical forms (aerogel, hydrogel, beads, and membrane), and applications in the removal of ...

A Review of Seaweed Pre-Treatment Methods for Enhanced Biofuel Production by Anaerobic Digestion or Fermentation

open access: yesFermentation, 2018
Macroalgae represent a potential biomass source for the production of bioethanol or biogas. Their use, however, is limited by several factors including, but not restricted to, their continuous supply for processing, and low biofuel yields.

CO2‐Responsive Smart Wood Scaffold for Natural Organic Matter Removal without Secondary Pollution

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A CO2‐responsive smart wood scaffold is developed for sustainable water purification, achieving efficient natural organic matter (NOM) removal and microbial disinfection without secondary pollution. The CO2‐responsive polymer coating undergoes protonation upon CO2 exposure, enabling strong cation−π interactions with NOM.

Efficient Harvesting of Nannochloropsis Microalgae via Optimized Chitosan‐Mediated Flocculation

open access: yesGlobal Challenges, 2019
Food‐grade rather than synthetic or chemical flocculants are needed for microalgae harvesting by settling, if used for food products. Chitosan is effective in harvesting freshwater microalgae, but it is expensive and typically not suitable for marine ...
