The first two complete mitochondrial genomes for the family Triglidae and implications for the higher phylogeny of Scorpaeniformes

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
The mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) can provide useful information for analyzing phylogeny and molecular evolution. Scorpaeniformes is one of the most diverse teleostean orders and has great commercial importance.

Effects of Long Chain Fatty Acid Synthesis and Associated Gene Expression in Microalga Tetraselmis sp.

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2014
With the depletion of global fish stocks, caused by high demand and effective fishing techniques, alternative sources for long chain omega-3 fatty acids are required for human nutrition and aquaculture feeds.

Phylogeny and Evolution of the Brown Algae

open access: yes, 2020
The brown algae (Phaeophyceae) are a group of multicellular heterokonts that are ubiquitous in today’s oceans. Large brown algae from multiple orders are the foundation to temperate coastal ecosystems globally, a role that extends into arctic and ...

Anisotropic Shear Properties of Organic Interfaces in Bio‐composite Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A novel cantilever design enables direct probing of shear properties at single organic interfaces within biocomposite prismatic ultrastructures. By decoupling lateral and torsional shear responses, the method reveals isotropic behavior in Atrina vexillum and pronounced anisotropy in Unio pictorum.

LARVICIDAL ALGAE

open access: yesJournal of the American Mosquito Control Association, 2007
Although most algae are nutritious food for mosquito larvae, some species kill the larvae when ingested in large quantities. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) that kill larvae do so by virtue of toxicity. While blue-green algae toxins may offer possibilities for delivery as larvicides, the toxicity of live blue-green algae does not seem consistent ...

Microplastics from Wearable Bioelectronic Devices: Sources, Risks, and Sustainable Solutions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bioelectronic devices (e.g., e‐skins) heavily rely on polymers that at the end of their life cycle will generate microplastics. For research, a holistic approach to viewing the full impact of such devices cannot be overlooked. The potential for devices as sources for microplastics is raised, with mitigation strategies surrounding polysaccharide and ...

OCTOID: A Soft Robotic System Featuring Programmable Shape Morphing and Dynamic Structural Coloration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by octopuses, actuating legs based on soft materials are fabricated with programmed chiroptical properties and mechanical behaviors to achieve dynamic color modulation and reversible shape morphing, and these legs are developed into a modular OCTOID system.
