The potential health benefits of seaweed and seaweed extract [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Edible seaweeds have historically been consumed by coastal populations across the globe. Today, seaweed is still part of the habitual diet in many Asian countries. Seaweed consumption also appears to be growing in popularity in Western cultures, due both

In situ rheological measurements of the external gelation of alginate [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Direct mixing of alginate and divalent cations such as Ca2+ generally produces heterogeneous gels that form almost instantaneously. Therefore, is particularly difficult to measure the rheological properties of this gelation event due to the rapid ...

High Energy Density Asymmetric Aqueous Supercapacitor Based on a 2D Manganese Carbide as a Positive Electrode

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A circular route, involving upcycling of waste surgical masks, affords a Mn‐based layered carbide with porosity, redox activity and low work function. These features enable its effective operation as positive supercapacitor electrode in an aqueous asymmetric supercapacitor delivering 213 Wh L−1 energy density.

The overview of methods for obtaining alginate hydrogels and nanofibers using the electrospinning technique

open access: yesZaštita Materijala, 2018
Alginates are anionic polysaccharides, which, due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability and ease of hydrogels preparations, have found numerous applications, primarily in biomedicine, water purification systems, absorption and adsorption systems ...

Paradigm shift for preparing versatile M2+-free gels from unmodified sodium alginate [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This manuscript describes a new route to prepare rapidly Ca2+-free hydrogels from unmodified sodium alginate by simply mixing with small organic molecules such as poly(carboxylic acid) compounds as cross-linker agents instead of classical divalent metal ...

Bioinspired Polypeptide Dendrimer‐Modified Thin‐Film Composite Membranes for Selective Lithium‐Magnesium Separation with DFT Insights

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We fabricated a biomimetic dendrimer‐modified thin‐film nanocomposite membrane with a coordination‐assisted ion‐selective interface. pH‐responsive polypeptide sites preferentially bind Mg2+ and promote Li+ permeation, as predicted by density functional theory calculations of metal‐ligand interactions.

Ultrasound‐Triggered Gelation for Restoring Biomechanical Properties of Degenerated Functional Spinal Units

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces an innovative approach to treating intervertebral disc degeneration using ultrasound‐triggered in situ hydrogel formation. Proof‐of‐concept experiments using optimized biomaterial and ultrasound parameters demonstrate partial restoration of biomechanical function and successful integration into degenerated disc tissue, offering a ...

Controlling Intestinal Organoid Polarity using Synthetic Dynamic Hydrogels Decorated with Laminin‐Derived IKVAV Peptides

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Design rules are presented to control intestinal organoid polarity in fully synthetic hydrogels. The laminin‐derived IKVAV sequence is crucial to obtain correct intestinal organoid polarity. Increasing hydrogel dynamics further supports the growth of correctly polarized intestinal organoids, while a bulk level of stiffness (G’ ≈ 0.7 kPa) is crucial to ...

Products from seaweeds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Seaweeds constitute one of the commercially important marine living renewable resources. They are the only source for the production of phytochemicals such as agar, agarose, carrageenan and algin which are widely used in various industries as gelling,
