Allergenic characteristics of a modified peanut allergen
Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, 2005Attempts to treat peanut allergy using traditional methods of allergen desensitization are accompanied by a high risk of anaphylaxis. The aim of this study was to determine if modifications to the IgE-binding epitopes of a major peanut allergen would result in a safer immunotherapeutic agent for the treatment of peanut-allergic patients.

ALLERGEN immunotherapy is the process by which increasing doses of allergen are injected subcutaneously over time as a treatment to prevent allergic symptoms that usually occur on exposure to allergen. The effects of this therapy on the immunologic processes ascribed to allergic responses have been studied in great detail.

From Allergen Extracts to Allergen Genes and Allergen Molecules
2015An allergen is a type of protein capable of instructing the immune system to start producing IgE antibodies. The main purpose for determining the structure of major allergens is to analyze the exposed surface areas and to map the conformational epitopes. These can be determined by experimental methods including crystallographic and NMR-based approaches
