THE SPETACLED CAIMAN (Caiman crocodilus, CROCODYLIA, ALLIGATORIDAE) AS A PREDATOR OF THE AMAZON SAILFIN-CATFISH (Pterygoplichthys pardalis, SILURIFORMES, LORICARIDAE)

open access: yesRevista Latinoamericana de Herpetología, 2023
We report an event of a Caiman crocodilus consuming the catfish Pterygoplichthys pardalis. A list of known prey items of C. crocodilus was also compiled from the literature, including known vertebrate and invertebrate items for this species.

Osteology and cranial musculature of Caiman latirostris (crocodylia: Alligatoridae)

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, 2011
AbstractCaiman latirostris Daudin is one of the extant species of Caimaninae alligatorids characterized taxonomically only by external morphological features. In the present contribution, we describe the cranial osteology and myology of this species and its morphological variation. Several skull dissections and comparisons with other caimans were made.

Ontogeny of the Postcranial Axial Skeleton of Melanosuchus niger (Crocodylia, Alligatoridae) [PDF]

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, 2017
ABSTRACTThis study proposes the description of the development of the postcranial axial skeleton, including vertebrae, gastralium, ribs, sternum, and interclavicle, in Melanosuchus niger. Six nests were marked and two eggs removed from each nest at 24‐hr intervals until hatching. For posthatching evaluation, 30 hatchlings were kept in captivity and one

Irregularly calcified eggs and eggshells of Caiman latirostris (Alligatoridae: Crocodylia)

open access: yesNaturwissenschaften, 2013
We describe irregularly calcified egg and eggshell morphologies for the first time in nests of the broad-snouted caiman, Caiman latirostris. Research is based on detailed descriptions of 270 eggs from a total sample of 46,800 collected between 2005 and 2011 in Santa Fe Province, Argentina, and encompasses animals from both natural habitats and held in ...

The relationship between nesting habitat and hatching success in Caiman latirostris (Crocodylia, Alligatoridae) [PDF]

open access: yesPhyllomedusa: Journal of Herpetology, 2006
The Broad-snouted Caiman uses different habitats for nesting; it has temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) and nesting habitat selection by females could affect sex and other hatchlings characteristics.
