Genotoxic Effects of Marshal in Allium cepa L.

Turkish Journal of Botany, 1996
The aim of this study is to investigate the c-mitotic effect of Marshal in the root tip cells of Allium cepa L. and whether it can induce the formation of micronuclei and other mitotic abnormalities. The roots of A. cepa were treated with 5×10-6, 10-5, 5×10-5 and 10-4 (v/v) final concentrations of Marshal for 2, 4 and 6 hours.

Allium cepa L. (Amaryllidaceae)

2020
This common vegetable is used in cooking throughout the world. Galen said that its application on ringworm of the scalp causes hair to grow and its use with sesame oil followed by exposure to sunlight is beneficial for albunism. Use of onion juice in eyes for cataract due to thick humours is beneficial.

Biomonitoring Hospital Effluents by the Allium cepa L. Test

Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 2009
Hospital effluents are serious problems in developing countries like Brazil, and when not treated adequately, can cause mutagenic effects on live organisms. Biomonitors, like Allium cepa L., which is one of the most used plant species when monitoring effluent genotoxicity, have been used to alert the world population about environmental contamination ...

Flavonoids in Onion Cultivars ( Allium cepa L.)

Journal of Food Science, 2008
ABSTRACT:  Total phenol and flavonoid contents were analyzed by HPLC coupled with a diode array detector in 5 traditional onion cultivars from Tenerife (Guayonje, San Juan de la Rambla, Carrizal Alto, Carrizal Bajo, and Masca) and a commercial cultivar (Texas Early Grano 502).

POLYPLOID FORMS OF ONION (Allium cepa L. × Allium fistulosum L.) AND GARLIC (Allium sativum L.)

A nutans L., A. odorum L., A. schoenoprasum L.

The effect of lead on Allium cepa L.

Mutation Research Letters, 1992
The effect of lead on Allium cepa L. at concentrations of 0.1, 1.0, 10, 50, 100 and 200 ppm were studied. Analysis focused on root growth, frequency of mitosis in a meristematic zone, and chromosomal aberrations. It was observed that lead reduces root growth and the frequency of mitotic cells in meristematic zones, and increases the frequency of ...

Chromosomal organization of centromeric Ty3/gypsy retrotransposons in Allium cepa L. and Allium fistulosum L.

Russian Journal of Genetics, 2014
This is the first report on the presence of Ty3/gypsy-like retrotransposons in the centromeric region of Allium cepa and Allium fistulosum. The paper identifies the putative Ty3/gypsy centromeric retrotransposons (CR) among the DNA sequences of A. cepa present in the NCBI database and evaluates their copy number in the genomes of Allium cepa and Allium

2022
The effect of a solution of quantum dots based on cadmium telluride (CdTe QD) as a powerful cytostatic effector was investigated, by using a standard Allium-test system. The cytostatic effects of the experimental CdTe QD solution at the organismal level were manifested in a decrease in the linear growth and biomass of Allium cepa L.

Biased chloroplast and mitochondrial transmission in somatic hybrids of Allium ampeloprasum L. and Allium cepa L.

Plant Science, 1998
Abstract Somatic hybrid plants, produced by symmetric protoplast fusion between leek (Allium ampeloprasum) and cytoplasmic male sterile onion (Allium cepa), were analyzed for their organelle composition. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analyses were performed using PCR amplification of the V7 region of the mitochondrial small ribosomal RNA (srRNA) gene in ...

Haploidy in onion (Allium cepa L.) and other Allium species

1996
The genus Allium contains some of the most important vegetables and spices used throughout the world including onion, leek, garlic, and shallot. Additional Allium species are cultivated more regionally including chives (A. schoenoprasum L.), Chinese chives (A. tuberosum Rottl. ex Spr. and A. ramosum L.), rakkyo (A. chinense G. Don), and A. hookeri Thw.
