Allodynia and Dysmenorrhea

Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Canada, 2016
Cutaneous allodynia (pain from a non-painful stimulus) is a sign that can be observed among women with chronic pelvic pain. Dysmenorrhea is recognized as a common cause of chronic pelvic pain in women. This study was conducted to explore the frequency of allodynia and the relationship between allodynia and severe dysmenorrhea. We enrolled women in this ...

Allodynia in cluster headache

Pain, 2017
Abstract Cutaneous allodynia is an established marker for central sensitization in migraine. There is debate whether cutaneous allodynia may also occur in cluster headache, another episodic headache disorder. Here, we examined the presence and severity of allodynia in a large well-defined nationwide population of people with cluster headache.

Hyperalgesia and allodynia: peripheral mechanisms

Joint Bone Spine, 2005
Nociceptive signals are generated by peripheral sensory organs called nociceptors, which are endings of small-diameter nerve fibers responsive to the tissue environment. The myriad chemical mediators capable of activating, sensitizing, or arousing nociceptors include kinins, proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines, prostanoids, lipooxygenases ...

Clinical recognition of allodynia in migraine

Neurology, 2004
Allodynia, a manifestation of central sensitization, is not routinely evaluated during clinical interviews even though its therapeutic implications are known. To assess the frequency and manifestations of allodynia in a clinic-based migraine population.A total of 295 consecutive International Headache Society migraine patients were evaluated using a ...

Allodynia and migraine

Neurological Sciences, 2012
An impaired processing of sensory afferents in the brainstem plays a key role in the development of migraine attack and for many of its clinical aspects. The repetition or prolonged of painful stimuli over time would be able to produce a prolonged and reversible increase of excitability and synaptic efficacy in the nociceptive pathways of the central ...

Allodynia, rigidity and gait disturbance

Practical Neurology, 2020
A 57-year-old woman presented with gait disturbance and falls. Two months before, she had first developed stiffness and painful spasms in her lower back and thighs. These sy7mptoms had worsened on trying to stand or walk, persisted while sleeping and progressed. She had no weakness, sensory loss or sphincter disturbance. There was no apparent infective

Vincristine-induced allodynia in the rat

Pain, 2001
The aims of this study were two-fold: first, to simplify the method for creating a recently described neuropathic pain model in the rat, and second, to evaluate the effects of a number of drugs with analgesic or antihyperalgesic properties, in this model. Continuous intravenous vincristine infusion (1-100 microg kg(-1) day (-1)) for 14 days resulted in

A new animal model of allodynia [PDF]

open access: possibleBulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, 1996
A new rat model of allodynia is developed in which penicillin, an inhibitor of GABAergic inhibition, is applied to the dorsal surface of lumbosacral segments of the spinal cord. Correlation is found between abnormal pain reactions in rats with allodynia and alterations of evoked potentials in their dorsal horns.

Allodynia in Cluster Headache

Current Pain and Headache Reports, 2010
Cutaneous allodynia (CA), the perception of pain when a non-noxious stimulus is applied to normal skin, has been described in various pain syndromes. The pathophysiology of CA in headache is thought to be related to central sensitization of brainstem, and possibly thalamic, neurons.

Migraine, allodynia, and implications for treatment

European Journal of Neurology, 2008
Allodynia – perception of pain from non‐noxious stimuli – is a common clinical feature in various pain syndromes. The significance for migraine has increasingly been recognized and the pathophysiology has been investigated in detail. Allodynia is a marker for sensitization of central trigeminal neurons.
