Sexual Dimorphism in Vertebral Number: Developmental Implications Inferred From Vertebral and Body Proportions

open access: yesEvolution &Development, Volume 28, Issue 3, September 2026.
The developmental basis of sexual dimorphism in vertebral number remains poorly understood. We show pronounced dimorphism in Oryzias setnai, linked to position‐dependent variation in vertebral length, providing a model for linking somitogenesis dynamics to body plan evolution. ABSTRACT Segmentation is a fundamental feature of vertebrate body plans, and

From Traits to Parameters: Genotype and Water Regime Effects on Sugar Beet (Beta vulgaris L.) Crop Model Parameterization

open access: yesJournal of Agronomy and Crop Science, Volume 212, Issue 5, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Understanding genotype × environment (G × E) interactions is essential for improving yield stability and resource use efficiency in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) under variable water availability. Field experiments with six diverse genotypes grown under two contrasting water regimes (fully irrigated vs.

Comparative functional morphological study of the tarsal joint mobility in artiodactyls and perissodactyls in light of astragalar morphological differences

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 249, Issue 3, Page 587-603, September 2026.
This study investigated how variations in the shape of the astragalus affect tarsal joint behavior, using CT scans. In artiodactyls with a double‐pulley astragalus, the calcaneus shifted plantarly during plantarflexion. This suggests the movement increases hindlimb functional length and contributes to enhanced running speed.

Frequency of arboreality is correlated with longer hand skeletons in Gorilla: Analysis of a new skeletal sample of Bwindi mountain gorillas

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 249, Issue 3, Page 544-564, September 2026.
Variation in arboreality across gorilla populations is associated with systematic differences in manual digital lengths. Using a new dataset of linear metrics from the Bwindi mountain gorillas, we quantify metacarpal and phalangeal lengths in eastern and western gorilla populations across all five rays. Consistent with quantified behavioral differences,
